Stock Intake/Filter

How good is the stock intake compared to aftermarket brands?

What about a high flow filter?

I'm not worried about the sound but more for the performance...

I've heard that sometimes you're better off not going aftermarket and that the stock is best for the car. I haven't seen anything on here about this topic unless I missed it.

Opinions?!

TIA

Powerwise you won't gain much especially if you do not have a tune. It is more for sound. I have one because I am FBO but other mods are much better for the money.

Are you stock?

I am stock for right now... I'm planning on what I want to get done with the car. Just wondering if its worth it to spend the money on an intake for good gains in power and performance.

All cars act different with different mods... this is my first time modding a BMW so trying to get knowledge before I start buying garbage.

If I were planning I would start with a tune JB4 or whatever you want. Then a charge pipe because they can blow even with stock boost. Then go from there. Down pipe, intercooler, etc. Intake will help the least.

If your stock intake was restrictive (which it is not), it would make sense to get an aftermarket unit. Best thing to do would be to get a new filter element from K&N or AFE (dry or oiled-cotton on the latter) for your stock airbox. The closed intake from AFE isn't that much different from the stock unit (other than the internal cone-shaped filter), and any other non-enclosed intake that is open to the engine compartment is not going to do much other than sound louder.

X2 on the K&N.. relatively cheap for its lifetime and no more buying filters
and increases airflow

Answer to my question! (and for non-enclosed intake besides it being louder, its open to sucking in more hot engine air ) I think I'm going to stick with a better filter and stock air box!

Good decision! Be a little wary of the oiled-cotton filter replacements - they're good, but you have to be very careful when cleaning and re-oiling them. Too much oil can cause issues with the MAF sensor.

On whats being said here, the intake MIGHT only help/improve a bit at higher RPMS if running a tune otherwise no point if the car is stock.
You wouldn't go wrong with AFE Dry filter or BMC

I've avoided aftermarket intakes due to possible issues like rough idling and CELs. I did add a drop in filter to the stock air box and am pushing 550 at the wheels no problem.

Coming from the Subaru world intakes don't add any power its just for sound. Stock intake is sufficient until you swap for a bigger turbo that flows more air.

I have the pure stage 2 and am still on stock intake with drop in filter. The oem air box flows fine.

I'm on my second 335 with JB4 and all the research I have done says an intake is not really worth the price. They look cool in the engine bay and provide a bit more spool sound but the power increase is marginal and the chance for problems (including dealer seeing mods if your on warranty) is increased. Just don't see the value for these cars.

Wow! Just curious have you tried an intake with bigger piping?

+1 for OEM airbox.

I had AFE dry drop in and AFE air scoop ( creates a ram air effect into airbox) throttle response sharper and IATs slightly lower
