It was a 1996 Subaru wagon and/or a 1996 Olds Cutlass. But neither was mine, but that's what the parents had for me. Then a 1997 Buick century which I drove after university and was actually mine, handed down by my parents. It was a freakin tank. Now I'm in a 2002 Lexus which was also handed down. So Ive still never bought my own car...

Back in the 70's you gotta remember (those of us who got our first car in that decade) there wasn't a lot of other options out there. Older American cars were available and inexpensive.

1987 Nissan Maxima. It had features that no car has today. For example, there was a voice that told everything. If you left the key in the ignition, it would let you know. If your door was open and you started driving, it would say, "Right door is open". "Lights are on". Everyone in my high school used to be blown away by that feature!!!
Good memories... |

1977 Ford LTD coupe, with a 400 ci engine that might have made 140hp. It was mostly beige with a dark blue hood and the trunk and parts of the roof that was Rustoleum (sp?) brown.

1972 Buick Le Sabre. It had a 455 ci engine. It handled horribly, but was relatively quick for a car of its size. Used to say that it would pass anything but a gas pump. Mileage was << 10 mpg. Speedo went to 120 mph and I frequently had it pegged. Got pulled over once at 127 mph. The officer asked if I knew how fast I was going and I honestly said "I don't know."

Though as I'm now a dad I'm torn. When my boys can drive should they have some cheap old thing that fair enough will be slow and uncomfortable but not exactly safe? Or something newer with good safety but will probably be quite a bit quicker? |

1985 Ford Tempo in 1996. White with rust. Muffler optional... That was followed up by a 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis in 1997. I could fit my entire basketball squad in it. |
