Just got my car back from service after they replaced the steering rack and did a balance. The car is perfect now. No vibration at all. Way to go south motors bmw to take care of the issue the very first time. I have the m suspension and 19"s btw.

It's just the blind spot detection silly people. the steering wheel vibrates as a warning if your turn signal is on and the car thinks something is in your blind spot. LOL

Wow, I can't believe in the 837 prior posts that no one thought of that. What a bunch of idiots...

I knew BMW was scamming us by asking us to pay for that option then they put it in at no charge anyway. But why did they exclude DHP equipped cars and cars built 11/2012+?

From my experiene every 3 or 5 series has the vibration. Not everybody finds it annoying, otherwise there should be more complaints.
I can confirm the new steering rack (i have it) doesn't help (for me).
Can't be 'every' 3 series as my 335i does not have any vibration.
It didn't vibrate with the OEM S001's and it's not vibrating now with the
Conti DWS tires either.

It's got to be some tolerance issues so that when the planets are aligned just so, there is a vibration.
This is not good for BMW, not at all.

I do have an odd clunk though in my steering that is felt through the steering wheel.
It's amazing that BMW has now redesigned and/or replaced a LOT of steering related parts.
BMW's engineering and testing has gone awry.
This is a prime example of "if it ain't broke, don't break it".
Yet, BMW has managed to break what used to be the benchmark in steering feel and function in sport sedans.
They had it right for so many years until they decided to water down the driving feel of the 3 series in order to appease the marshmallow driving masses and get a larger market share.
They succeeded in getting market share, and somewhat ruined the excellent steering feel.

After owing my 335i since September, I can now honestly say that this IS a softer 3 series in every aspect from suspension to steering to braking. It's loaded with a gaggle of techno geewhiz, which doesn't impress me, as I value the driving experience more so than the worthless button pushing to set "driver preference". My preference is for BMW to get one setup that works.
Even with the DHP and it's added settings I still can't get the settings I actually want.
So, driver preference is a huge FAIL in my view/experience.

I hope they figure it out before my lease is up as I'll be in the market again. I'm done with making and accepting excuses for what BMW is doing. This is my 3rd BMW and the least fun to drive BMW. Other than the wonderful 3.0 turbo engine and it's power the driving experience is more utilitarian than fun. Honeymoon is over I guess.
My friend, the m performance suspension will change your entire view.

Sucks that we have to pay more $$$ for them to get it right though...

I don't have DHP.

Nope, M Performance Suspension. Go to the suspension thread and see my experience, we had a member from Canada get it done as well..

That's because the vibration is most of the time not visible (at least not in my case). The vibration is only noticeable when holding your hands on the steering wheel. I have the impression that the vibration comes from somewhere in the steering rack.

in my case it's actually quite visible when I take my hands off the steering wheel. I have been thinking about shooting a video (to use as evidence for lemon law)- need to find a way to fix a camera inside the car.

Just hold it in your hands. They don't have anything else in them...

Who knows when these were built. My 11/12 car has no issues (plain jane M-sport suspension). And it's had 3 different sets of wheels/tires installed.

actually somebody did. Check my posts. There is a youtube video showing the vibration. It was fixed for by updating to the new rack, changing one tire, balancing and alignment using very small tolerances. In review, only the alignment with small tolerances helped.

Steering rack. Yes, front wheels.

Make sure car is clean and accident free. Check VIN with BMW dealer to be sure you have no surprises with warranty.

Buy a 200$ gopro and you can mount it anywhere inside the car. It'll move with the car, and hopefully the vibration will be apparent. With the lemon law, all you have to do is get the dealer to confirm it has a problem and can be reproduced and then just bring it back 3 times without them being able to fix it. Save the service records then tell write a letter to BMW.

I can't divulge what happened with me with a previous car and BMW but I made out ok.
