Sorry for bumping all the old threads today :newbie

I think that there are a number of contributing problems that cause this. These cars feel like they have lots of caster, making them prone to wobble, compounded by garbage tires that are hard to balance.

IMO Most of all its tires, I installed new (non-rft) tires on my car and had then road forced them ( by an INDY) it's gone 100% and I've had the problem since the day I bought the car now has 12K, been back multiple times to rebalance, etc.

Which RFTs did you have before you switched them out and what tires do you now have?

I have had bad luck with non-RFT Contis twice on my E39. That car was so sensitive to vibrations it was insane.

The tires were slightly out of round (oval shape) that only became evident with road force balancing. Had to replace two separate batches before it was finally fixed. Not trying to knock Contis or anything but what are the odds of two batches being bad. On a regular car that is not as sensitive (Camry) you may never notice a problem.

I know this is a very old thread. But im looking for some help. Here is a video i recorded. I went through every page and no one posted one accurately showing the 'shimmy':

The dealership already rebalanced the tires(they were new when i bought the car. Car is 2014 335. Rims are 403M on RFTs.

Im bringing it back to the dealer to see if they can do something. I want to see if an alignment can fix it. Ive read the Toe can be off and cause this. Dont think its the steering rack as users have had it replaced with no fix.

Anyone got any other ideas on a fix?

Great idea, before anything ill ask which balance was done on the tires. Im going to push for a free alignment as the car was bought a month ago with 4 new tirez

Yeah good idea. also ask to confirm there are no bends in wheels. Sometimes they won't say anything and they will just try and offset the bend with weights while they balance... That's probably easiest place to start. Good luck man!

Wouldnt that be the most expensive route for me though? I feel like even though I bought it a month ago they wouldnt give me a free wheel

There are Wheel shops that will repair/straighten for close to $100 per wheel. But regardless I think just asking to put that to rest and check it off the list as not being the cause is still useful.

i've the same issue bought the car second hand, did several balances still exists, i think its not from tires because unbalanced tire will make the shake from 80-100 to 120-140km/h this one is permanent from 60km/h to ......

Stll cant be 100% sure because of extreme incompetence of tire specialist around NYC area, most shops are such a crap cant trust them

I had this same issue with stock Bridgestone RFTs. Switched to non-RFT continental DWS, and just recently Discount tire's branded Nitto tires and the ride is pretty smooth. Just make sure that they road force balance the wheels and that they're not stacking on weights. Also, if your tire pressure is too high you'll have more road feel on the steering. Try inflating your tires to the recommended values in your door jamb when your tires are cold. Lastly, if you have modified your suspension make sure that you go through and re-torque everything while the suspension components are under load.

So you're issue disappeared after replacing the tires ? and road force balance them ? My other suggestion is the output shaft

For me tire/balance was the fix.

I'm having this issue with my 16 428i Gran Coupe. All 4 tires are RFB, alignment is good, wheels were inspected/tested for damage and they came back clean. The steering wheel just shimmies between 40-60 mph...it's driving me insane because it's inconsistent. Going back to the dealership on Monday to see what they have to say...you'd think this is something you wouldn't have to deal with on a $55,000 car...

Keeping this thread alive:

2014 335i M Sport, 18" wheels, Pirelli Run Flats [OE]

Thought I was being overly critical with my slight vibration at 40mph, but seems to be common issue with the F30. Posting my wheel/tires as some say that could potentially be the culprit.

Had the car aligned, tires balanced, and rotated while it was in for routine maintenance thinking this would solve the problem.

$150 later and it did not correct the issue, just a head up for anyone contemplating having this done.

I’m not sure if it will make you feel better or not, but every F30 that I’ve driven has this issue to some degree. This goes for all model years. What I can also say is that the problem does diminish somewhat as miles build up on the tires.

Getting my wheels straightened, and installing some new PS4S tires solved the issue for me! It was driving me mad for a while, honestly.

It just amazes me that you guys are still dealing with this issue almost six years later!!
I started this thread in 2012 and thought it was an isolated case or at least would be fixed after first year production... I guess I was wrong!

Yes my 2015 335 does it my mechanic says get a new vibration generator (steering dampner) or if that don't work a new steering control unit

Tomorrow we're going to first remove the front tires on the wheels and we're going to true the wheels on a machine to make sure they're perfectly round they were going to reset the tire to the best spots on the wheel that's the best way I can put it and we'll see what happens I like to plan.

Well that didn't work so it's got to be something in the steering column there's two electronic parts in there once a vibration unit the other is the control unit and to looking at that today.
