iDrive crashing

Has anyone experienced their iDrive system crashing?

Mine has done it quite a few times now. Seems to be getting more frequent.

The display just goes black, audio goes off (was reversing today when it happened and PDCs went off). After 30 seconds or so the BMW text appears, followed by restoration of everything else....

Quite annoying really.

Not sure if it's related but I've also seen that the track listing just gets stuck on the first track and does not progress through the music as it moves from one track to the next.

Need to find time to take it to a dealer...

Anyone else seen similar gremlins?

I had this on Friday whilst traveling on the M25, system totally went off and then restarted. That is the first time it has happened since I got the car.

I've heard that a corrupt MP3 file can cause this, even though it seems to play fine - the iDrive software can't cope with it and falls over in a heap.

Were you playing anything at the time?

Has happened to me too numerous times - but only when iPhone 5 connected via USB and playing music. Media display seemed to freeze on a track (could still get to Nav and other screens) and then would crash and reboot. Haven't seen it happen since I stopped running the Connected app on the phone - that could just be coincidence though ;-)

I've had it happen on tracks played from the USB drive and CD. Can't remember it happening on the radio but it probably has.

NISFAN - have you got any feedback from BMW yet?

Glad other people are seeing this. Will get my car booked in soon.

I've had it happen listening to Radio, on a phone call, listening to hard drive source, so no clear 'catalyst'.

No feedback from BMW, no contact at all since they damaged my car.

NISFAN, did you ever get any joy from BMW on your iDrive issue?

Mine is booked in for two days next Wednesday. Haven't had it crash since it was booked in though...! Typical.

No, they updated maps (Jan 13 release) but didn't get to the bottom of the crashing....apparently it doesn't even log the event in the error log.

I don't have the car any more so can't comment on whether it was fixed.

I've had the same issue a number of times. Annoying. Sometimes without any USB or radio on, just seems to reset. I thought it might be cold temperature. Usually only happens within 10 minutes of starting from cold. A mystery.

NISFAN - your car isn't the one that's on eBay with 139 miles on the clock written off in a salvage yard is it?

I suspect that BMW are not going to be able to get to the bottom of the issue, especially if is not logged as an error. I will be frustrated if they can't fix it. It will quickly become a point of principle and the fact that they can't fix it will be more of an issue than the fault itself. Anyway, I should probably not condemn them before they've had a go at fixing it!

I agree that it seems to happen within the first 10-15 mins of driving the car.

No, lol My car was involved in a low speed 'incident'.

Regarding the Nav, yes it seems we are doing the Beta testing, which you don't expect. No one signed up to be test pilots at full asking price.

My car has been in the dealers to look at this and a few other things. They say that they detected a problem with the idrive. They have done a software update and it is now working correctly.... They did not tell me what the problem was.

I pick it up later on. I will let you know if it dies on me again..

Watch this space!

Software update. Their answer to everything

I honestly think the dealers don't know what else to try when we report issues.

Had my first crash yesterday - idrive crash that is

Listening to DAB radio and navigation was guiding and the whole thing just rebooted. Great.

I guess I'll just, in an orderly fashion join the growing (and already mile long) queue of 'software update' recipients - how exciting.....

When I first told BMW about my iDrive crash they were unsure of what it could be. I then told them that during one of the crashes it displayed 'No Signal' in red text on the screen.

This piece if information seemed to help them find the source of the issue - not sure how. Of course I have yet to verify that they have fixed anything...

Garage List
Is the common theme that a USB drive is actually connected (regardless of whether music is being played from it) when the crash happens? I'm sure I've seen the spinning circle thing on a few occasions suggesting that iDrive periodically scans the device in the USB socket, in which case could that be a potential trigger? Easy enough to test by removing any USB device and seeing if the crashing still happens.
