Cree make LEDs, they have a reputation for being high quality and high output for the wattage. That being said, they still 'bin' their LEDs so you could buy LEDs from a cheap bin where the colours are different and put them in one bulb with rubbish heatsinking and driver and you'd end up with a bulb that has different colours in it and burns out quickly.
On the other hand, you could get all LEDs for one bulb from a single 'good' bin and provide a good quality driver and ample heatsink and end up with a high quality product. Just because they look the same and say CREE, doesn't mean they're as good. That being said, there's no real way of finding out who is and isn't making good bulbs with LED chips. |

I wouldn't say that CREE makes all or even most of the LEDs. But CREE is definitely a reputable manufacturermanufacturer of high quality LEDs.

But if you'd spent tonnes of money and years of R+D, wouldn't you want to protect your designs? |

I believe cree also puts their name on finished bulbs as well. As for how good they are in bulb form, I wouldn't hesitate to buy them, doubt they would put out a bad bulb.
