Style m442's are HEAVY/// New Wheels

Brief summary considering this is my first post:
I've recently acquired a 2014 435i 6mt and am thoroughly enjoying it.
It is equipped with the M-Sport Package, M-Sport Brakes, M-Performace Power Kit, M-Perfomace Exhaust, wrapped in Black Sapphire Metallic and Corral Red interior.
I had no intentions on modding it for at least a year since it sits beautifully as-is but,...
I have already ordered new wheels, new tires, new down pipe, quad diffuser, quad exhaust tips, M-perfomace trunk spoiler (rep), and a Bimmertech amp; it hasn't even been a month since ownership lol

Anyway, since I had the car jacked up and both set of wheels off, I was curious to see how much each set weighed.

The stock m442 rear wheels (19 x 8.5) with Michelin Pilot Super Sport (255/35/19 @8/32 depth) weigh a staggering 54.7 lbs fully inflated!

The front wheels (19 x 8) with the stock Pirelli P-Zero run-flats (225/40/19 @6/32 depth) weigh 53.5 lbs fully inflated.

My new setup are Stance SF03's in brushed face silver.
The rears are 20 x 10.5 et 45 et45 with Michelin PSS 295/30/20 10/32 depth @ 40psi. The weight is 51.6 lbs for each rear tire and wheel combo. A savings of 3.1 lbs at the rear corners or a total of 6.2 lbs savings of unsprung mass for the rear.
A nice figure considering the new wheels/tires are larger in diameter and considerably bigger in terms of width.

The fronts are 20 x 9 et 35 with Michelin PSS 255/35/20 10/32 depth @ 40 psi. The weight is 50.4 lbs. The same savings of 3.1 lbs.

In summation, going to bigger 20 inch wheels (rotary forged/flow forged/etc.) saved me a total of 12.4 lbs of unsprung weight!
Attached are the pics of the wheels on a scale.
I might do a review of the new wheels in another post.

Very nice reduction, 12.4 lbs in unsprung weight is significant plus the added benefits of less rotating mass, now how about a picture of the new wheels on the car?

ps Your 442's would have weighed less if you'd cleaned them.

With the amount of brake dust these stock pads create, I wouldn't be surprised!

This is the front wheel

I was going for an OEM+ look; I wanted something bigger, lighter, sportier, would show off the beautiful brake calipers, yet something that wouldn't look ghetto or out of place.

The rears stick out ~2mm the fronts are bang on.

Really steams me that BMW delivers these cars with such pig boat wheels. I'm mean I like the way the 442s look and I have them on my 340, but when the engineers got together to make decisions about wheels and tires did unsprung weight enter into the discussion? Of course it did. And yet this is what they deliver. Really reveals the company's priorities. I remember reading that the 19 inch 432s on the M cars weigh around 19lbs. So obviously it can be done. Ya they are forged, but even the 432 reps are in that range. that and the ridiculous runflat corporate offering is just all wrong for a marque that prides itself on driving performance. Just dumb - like throwing cement shoes on a welterweight boxer.
Will be swapping wheels and tires at some point.

Its probably a combination of price and strength. The 437Ms in my avatar are 21.9 and 22.5 lbs btw.

Cost is always a factor in engineering decisions for any product which call for calculated tradeoffs - something I deal with everyday...

By the way, you don't want to start a discussion between OEM wheels vs. reps lol

I just feel that since the corporate decision is to burden the cars with these awful and heavy runflats maybe they could have figured out how to lighten up the wheels a tad. In fairness the true performance pxkage for the f30's is the 18 inche wheel with non runflats which is at least an option. I bet the weight on that combination is pretty low. Just doesn't look great imo

the track pack's cast 18" 398's w/MPSS(very light tires) are lighter than 442 or 403 19's but i don't consider it light.

aftermarket forged and rotary forged 18's/19's in 8.5"-9.5" widths can be as light as 18-20lbs per wheel. the best & lightest street performance tires are MPSS, MPS4S, Conti ECSport, Conti SC6. with the right combination it is possible to shed 10lbs of wheel/tire weight at each corner.

of course, in most cases cutting weight is not cheap...

I'm sure they factored in the fact that 90%+ of BMW owners don't know or care how much their wheels weigh.

Or why it makes a difference.

That's some impressive fitment!

Are you on stock/M-sport suspension? No issues with rubbing?

These photos were taken with M-sport suspension. The front rubbed at full lock and the rears rubbed slightly over big potholes.

442m are heavy but solid rims. I have hit many potholes and the rim survived. I now use these as my winter rims.
