Was the N20 offset crankshaft a fail?
It's interesting how the offset crank didn't make it to the B series engines and no other car manufacturers have adopted it to my knowledge.
I've read that it's better for low RPM but worse for high RPM. Who has driven a 328i N20 and a 330i B48 back-to-back? Thoughts? |

I've driven both and the engines are different enough that it's impossible to say. All offset crank is supposed to do is reduce piston friction (supposedly). Maybe the benefits are not there.
In general, BMW likes to go back and forth on engine designs. For example, the B48 is now back to a mechanical water pump whereas the N20 was electric. Is it really better? The B48 also has the chain drive in the back. Let's see how long that lasts before it's moved to the front again. I find that every iteration of BMW engines is better holistically. On a component level, it's not always the case. |

I haven't seen any dyno runs for the B48. Be interesting to see output vs the N series.......
