More F30 328's than 335's...

I didn't crunch the numbers, but my perception is there are more F30 328 owners on the forum than 335 owners.
I understand the appeal of the 4 cyl engine, which is very impressive and how much more similar the 328’s are to the 335’s, but
I’m surprised how many more 328’s there are compared to 335’s.

On the E9X forum 328's are a lot less discussed and it doesn't appear to be as many 328's owners on the site. It’s about a 8K to 10K price difference
between the 2 with the same options. Maybe it’s the price?

Definitely a change in the paradox…

328 outsells the 335 by far. Always has. You really can't use the forums as a gauge for actual numbers.

Folks that buy 335s are more performance/enthusiast oriented because they're generally paying as much as you would for a 528.

For the first time, the 328 has a great motor and has much less of a deficit compared to the 335 as it has had in the past.

And why is this in the media section?

I'm trying to give BMW $50k+ for a 335i for ED, but they're not building anymore beyond dealer allocation. The number of 328's vs. 335i's at my local dealer is like 20 to 1. That ratio might change if they actually had more than one 335.

I would think it's a price point thing.

Something else to consider: The N20 is one hell of a fun engine.

It's lighter, it's faster, it makes 275 HP, and the turbo's in Sport mode make it a rocket off the line.

I came off a 2009 E90 M-Sport which felt heavy and slow, was going to get the 335i on my next 3 Series, no question, especially with the stigma around 4 cylinder engines. But when I started reading the reviews and hearing people raving about it I took a test drive and it only took about 1 minute for me to go whoa, that's got some kick.

The lighter weight of the F30 combined with the more throaty, rocket engine sold me, got me away from the 335i mindset. From what I read, the 328i and 335i are very close in performance in realworld, typical conditions, so you get lighter weight, similar performance, better handling, and better gas mileage.

A lot of words to say that the difference between the two engines is marginal for the typical 48 year old executive commuting to work and driving the kids to baseball practice, and quite a few enthusiasts have gone 328i because they simply think it's a better driver's engine.

In Canada, the difference ($5250) is far less between a well equipped 328 (with Executive + Premium) and similarly equipped 335i (Premium).

For that amount, the 335i comes standard with the following features that are unavailable on the 328i in Canada:

1. adaptive head lights
2. high beam assist
3. decoding for high beam assist
4. decoding for variable light
5. Sport auto transmission w/paddles
6. upgraded brakes
7. blow by heater
8. upgraded exhaust system
9. superb six cylinder engine with 300+hp and 300+ lbs.ft torque
10. superb soundtrack

and one more reason to go for the 335i in Canada: The M Sport package ! (not available with 328i in Canada)

The downsides to ordering a 335i : apart from the extra cost, the current long wait times for a factory order (especially RWD) and the fact that demand far exceeds dealer supply.

As for fuel economy, the Transport Canada ratings show a difference of only 0.5 litres/100 kms between the 328i combined city/hwy and the 335i combined city/hwy. Compared to a 328i Xdrive, the 335i RWD is rated as more fuel efficient !!!

When I was out looking around dealers and I went by one of the largest in the country, they literally had 70-80 328i and 1 335i, it was mineral gray with a big sold sign in the window...

I know and that's crazy... I was fortunate I live in Denver and several of the Dealerships had several 335 “i’s” in stock due the X Drives not being out yet.
Plus they loaded them up since it was a brand new model.

Not a lot of demand for non X Drives in Denver….

The n20 is going to be embraced by the aftermarket.

I have heard companies say they will support the n20 when they would have ignored the n52 in favir if the n54 and n55 in the past.

Agree...... It also surprised me how many 335 owners went to 328's. But with the selection of the different "lines" and engines, I think it made the difference between the 328's and 335's a lot less of an issue.

I still see a marginal difference in the US between the 328 and 335 in terms of options.

I priced out the same build in both, but having to add xenons and moonroof to the 328 along with the slightly higher price of packages on the 328 only created a difference of about 4000 which to me made it all the more worthwhile to go with the bigger motor.

I do see from a fuel economy stand point why the 328 would be a better commuter, but my office is 8 miles away.

I agree about the price observation.

I'm not having a go at the 328, but a lot of women buy 3-series BMW's. I'd guess the vast majority don't care about 60 extra HP and will buy a 328 with a technology/nav package. Add in price conscience or HP oblivious male 3-series buyers, and add it just adds up to a lot more 328i's being manufactured and sold.

None of us are Michael Schumacher, the 328 covers it adequately for 90% of the buyers.

The first F30 I drove was a 328i. I was thoroughly impressed by the N20.

Then I drove the N55-equipped F30 335i. As much as I liked the N20, it wasn't even close, in my opinion.

The 328i (3410 lbs) isn't that much lighter than the 335i (3555 lbs), either.

Bottom line - You can't go wrong with either.

All this 328i logic is very reasonable, and holds up just fine in the real world... Until you actually go test drive a 335i after driving a 328i. Moral relativism is asinine but "bimmer relativism" is legit.
