Need help with winter tires
I own a 2012 335i and am looking to get winter tires. The thing is I have no idea what I am doing....
Do I just buy tires to fit my stock 18 inch rims or should i new 17 inch wheels and tires? (I don't care about the look of the care. Just need to drive in the snow) Am I going to have a problem with the TPS? I read mechanics won't install new tires without the TPS? I found these, are they any good? http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....cleSearch=true I really appreciate any help!!!! |

i just spoke with the tire dealer i normally use and ordered these.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....r=Sport%20Line he said i don't want to get smaller wheels because the car's electronic systems (abs, traction control) have been calibrated for the stock wheel size and if you go smaller, the higher wheel revolutions that would result might throw the car's systems off. he also said you dont want studless tires because the speed rating is so low. as a result, i went with performance winter tires to be mounted on my stock wheels |

use this to determine what size would work http://1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp smaller wheels are absolutely the way to go as long as the calculator at that site returns at most a 3% difference. greater than that will cause faulty speedo readings (which will be off by a percentage... so faster you go will be off more).
smaller wheel and tire is better for winter... both in diameter and width. small width increase effective downforce per square inch. many folks will try to say that a larger tire will give more grip but thats absolutely the opposite of true. (http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/...jsp?techid=126) studless is the way to go as most states have laws against studded tires and you can get a very cost effective and good performing setup with studless. best snow tire is blizzak ws70 (per tire rack and consumer reports... and have used them personally... excellent rubber below 35 degrees). performance snow tires are a joke... they are neither good performing nor good in snow. if your goal is to have a performance snow tire, then move to a warmer climate. if you dont care about looks, you should be all set for ~$900 (without TPMS).

Go with the Tire Rack winter wheel/tire packages. Have my BMW 401's in the basement and cheap wheels w/Blzzacks on for the winter.

Tirerack recommends these..
Bridgestone Blizzak WS60 (Studless Ice & Snow) Snow Tire Warranty Rating 3.5 Sidewall Style: Blackwall Size: 225/55-16 (4) Serv. Desc: 95R UTQG: None Price: $532.00 Estimated Availability: In Stock Optional Road Hazard Program: additional $14.41 per tire Sport Edition A7 (Silver Painted) Sport_Edition A7 View on Vehicle Size: 16x7.5 (4) Offset: +36mm Backspacing: 5.66" Bolt Pattern: 5-120 I am concerned will the 16's fit over our brakes? Not sure if it matter but i have Msport staggered now but not the upgraded 335 Msport brakes.

i thought state law requires you to have the TPMS installed....
"NHTSA's interpretation of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits service providers from installing aftermarket tires and wheels on your vehicle without working TPMS sensors" I guess if you mount the tires yourself you dont need to install them |
