Time for Service?

Hey all,

I own a f32 420i 2018 model, i bought it with 2k miles on it now the car has ~7k miles

I rarely use it especially now with the Covid-19 everything is closed, working from home so it just sits in the garage. It is not my daily car so I was only using it on some night-outs.

The car has never been serviced before except for the initial service at 2miles i think, that's what the computer says...

The car is telling me to schedule a maintenance/service appointment to the local dealer and to check Engine Oil.

I don't feel like the car needs to be serviced at this point. Should I do it anyways? Or should I just change the engine oil myself and schedule a maintenance later on?

What do you suggest?

How many months ago was your last oil change?
5 liters of oil and a filter isn't too expensive and shouldn't take you too long to change.

I bought the car from BMW Dealership and the dealer said that he will change the oil for me before picking up my car, but it is not recorded in the service history of the car. Plus who can trust dealers? So I do not know for sure, either it's from 2k miles or from 2miles

Does it void the warranty if i change the filter myself?

As long as you keep receipt of oil and filter and make a note of it then no it should not void your warranty BUT you would be well advised to buy said oil and filter from your local BMW centre as your invoice will contain not just the date of purchase but also your car registration or VIN number, all this is only a good thing to have.
They really can’t dispute it then can they.

The suggested oil change interval is 10k miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. The time interval is really a matter of climate. In zones where winters are cold the oil gets contaminated by condensation. I doubt that's a concern in Cyprus. You don't have to get the oil or filter from a dealer, but you do need to use an OEM Mann or Mahle filter. They come with the correct replacement O-ring, and a new drain plug, which is one time use only.

No you DON’T NEED to get. Your oil and filter from BMW but they have no direct connection between them (BMW) and yourself and car.
My reason for saying what I said is obvious as you have a valid BMW receipt for parts purchased for YOUR vehicle it is indisputable.
Entirely up to OP but my 440i is still got 2 years warranty, I own my own garage and still prefer to buy my service items from BMW for the reasons mentioned.
Each to their own

FYI on ALL my customers cars while under manufacturer warranty we only use OE service parts, I am fully aware of the laws regarding warranty claims and for that reason use OE only until 4 years old.
I don’t want the stress of arguing over any warranty issues which does NOT happen if you use OE parts, after that
Then it’s Mann or Mahle for me. Yes
It’s just the way I prefer to run my business :-)

I change my oil and filter at about 9K or every 12 months whichever comes first.
I believe in earlier rather than later, if you drive hard a lot of the time then reduce. To about 7K for oil changes.

Lmao a bunch of remarkably useless comments in here.

The car is probably about 3.5 years old and has apparently never had the oil changed. It is at 7,000 miles. Recommended BMW service is 1 year / 10,000 miles. As I understand it, BMW's service plan is mostly aimed at keeping the car serviceable to about 100k. I've had a few shops tell me that if you want your BMW to keep chugging long past 100k, you should be considering oil changes every 5,000 miles rather than the 10k recommended by BMW.

An oil change should be less than $400 even at the stealership. You've got a $45,000 car that you barely drive, my guess is you can afford the oil change. Plus a car fax full of frequent oil changes can only help on resale. If it were my car I'd probably go ahead and get the oil changed.

The other thing neglected in this discussion is the engine break in. If the oil has never been changed, definitely change it. If it has been changed and it has been several thousand miles and/or much longer than a year, change it.

Oil changes are 99$ for the N55 at my local dealership, so i assume they are the same or less for your car. It seems ridiculous to me to not change it if either of those conditions are met. You can of course DIY or less $, but with marginals savings, the risk of stripping the drain plug or pan if you aren't mechanically inclined, and the fact that you are still under warranty, i would just do to the dealership and get an oil change. It also helps to have this in the car record as noted above.

Seriously...this is funny. They could tie your invoice to your car with car registration and vin#. But how do they know you really did the oil change. Puff the magic dragon

OP just get the oil anywhere your comfortable with BMW certification... Keep the receipt for documentation. That's all you need.

You can do as much oil change you can but I'll go with billblitz. Once a year is enough as you don't get winter in cypress and you don't drive that much.

Some of discussion sound like personal choice.

OTOH I change mine every spring to clear out the winter crud, even though I average less than 4k miles per year. There's no one answer that covers every situation.

My ‘19 X2 has 4k miles. When spring gets here it will get an oil change. Probably at 5k miles. Lol

If it is under warranty take it to the dealer whenever the car wants to go.

This is the kind of comment that says a lot.
