Big issue for me in the big torque argument is how limiting it is when you want to press on. BMWs insistence on not offering a LSD even as an option on the 330d is mystifying.

The whole 330d vs. 328i question was a bit lopsided for me. Comparing a 3.0 6-cylinder diesel against a 2.0 4-cylinder petrol (even if they did have similar bhp) was a bit like comparing boxers of different weights. A welterweight might be close to a light heavyweight on a 'how hard do they hit' scale, but in the ring it's not an even contest.
I'd be more interested in how the 330d powerplant stacks up against offerings from Audi and Mercedes? For example, looking at Audi's 3.0 diesel on paper there's:

And the Mercedes 350 CDi engine is almost identical on paper to the 30D
Been looking at an R350L and it's a bit of a beasty

But the gearbox 7G Tronic Plus is very auto slushbox.....such a shame. Another niggle was the reliability of the engine.....I know a Merc indy and he has seen some horror stories regarding the V6 diesel. |

I had a F11 530D Auto, then the CLS350 CDI and I much prefer the BMW engine/gearbox combination. I couldn't really fault the Merc, I had no reliability issues and it was a very relaxed cruiser just not 'sporty' at all. Then there was the flappy paddles which just did their own thing no matter what I selected.
