NBT Continuously rebooting after new Maps install

Hi,

I have a 2013 F30 and I upgraded the maps in my NBT pro nav from 2017-2 to 2018-1 and this has caused some serious issues.

The upgrade seemed to complete without issue and I entered a new activation code to enable the new maps.

I then went for a drive and almost immediately the head unit crashed an rebooted. It then reloaded, displayed my current position on the map before going blank and rebooting again. This carries on continuously whilst I am driving.

If I stop the car I can navigate through the iDrive menus, listen to media and radio and browse maps without issue but as soon as I start moving it starts crashing again.

If I try and re-upgrade the maps by inserting the USB media then iDrive asks if I want to upgrade even though the version is no newer. If I select 'Upgrade anyway' it goes to the percentage completion screen where is stays at 0% for a few seconds before restarting the navigation system and saying the update was successful...(which it obviously wasn't).

Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem may be? Maybe the hard drive has died but that would be a real coincidence if it happened immediately after updating the maps.

Can't think of what else to try?

The hard disk on the head unit might have already had some bad sectors on it prior to the map update. It is possible to re-update the maps but you will need to first load an older version or the update for another region before you can re-load Europe 2018-1.

If the issue persists, you should see if you can have the head unit replaced under warranty.

Thanks for the advice.

I managed to successfully reload the 2017-1 maps and these work without issue.

If I attempt to reload the 2018-1 maps then the problem reappears. It seems as though the update process crashes the head unit at about 99% and then it keeps rebooting.

I have no warranty as the car is 2013 so would have to pay for the head unit replacement if that is the issue (christ knows how much that would cost).

Could it just be that the 2018-1 maps are incompatible with the iStep version of my car or something like that rather than a hard drive partial failure?

You can try re-downloading the entire package and installing to the car again.

A head unit replacement would not too bad if you purchase a used one. We can help you re-activate it to your VIN if necessary.

My 2013 NBT pro nav done exactly the same as yours shrubbery. The 2018 maps just caused crashes every 20 seconds or so but only with the engine running. Put the 2017-2 maps back on and the problem goes away.

These are the officially downloaded NEXT Europe 2018-1 maps from BMW.

As Revoltos had exactly the same issue with the same aged car (my iStep has never been upgraded) it looks like it may be a specific issue for 2013 hardware or software.

I would get Sytner to look at it but would probably cost a fortune.

Can anyone other than BMW carry out an istep update? I believe you get an actual volume bar on later versions too :-)

Sometimes I do just to have the HUD display the turns etc but I also rely on waze on my phone for traffic etc. I wish there were an option to send waze route from phone to iDrive.

To see the iStep version you need to connect to the car with an ENET cable and either ISTA or ESYS will both give you the info.

Is it something that can be done at home? I have esys and cable plus a C-tec charger. I've got minimal to no experience of coding etc though. I'm not an idiot though so can follow instructions.

Sorry for being blunt but did u read my comment before quoting? "And yes u can perform Istep upgrade at home" there's plenty of guides on this forum.

My 2013 car with NBT also misbehaving - running the 2018-1 maps but maybe issues started since I renewed RTTI?

I don't really see reboots but the Nav interface is very slow to respond, route lost while driving, takes ages to calculate a route, or recalculate when I took a diversion...

BMW wanted to charge £99 just to look at it since the car is out of warranty... I cancelled the appointment for now just to see what others here suggest...

Exactly the same problem here. 2013 F07 and updated NBT from 2017-2 to 2018-1. Now it's rebooting every few minutes, and when it's not rebooting it's very sluggish (can take 2 or 3 minutes to bring up a new route).

I guess the next step is to try reverting back to 2017-2, but that might be tricky if it's rebooting every 5 or 10 minutes. I'm also not sure if I still have those files ...
