Aside from hybrid technology i think the cylinder on demand tech could be the best. Personally i want something that I can drive on a daily commute and achieve a very high mpg on, but has the capability to perform like a beast when I want to be carefree and enjoy a drive.

I'm off to Spain shortly and will be driving from Santander down to near Alicante and back via Madrid (with missus onboard), just over a 1100 mile round trip, so will be interesting to see what I can get cruising on the Autopistas. |

If your average does include shortish commutes, 29.7mpg is not too bad. Most 'commuting' 335ds will only be averaging 20% more, although I expect the added function of 4WD prevents it being 30% higher. If 29.7mpg is mostly for decent runs (even if a bit spirited), that's still good for a 300hp petrol, but it does leave some distance to the 335d economy. Room in which many (not all - obviously!) accept the noise of a 6 cylinder diesel. My best mate (of 36 years) drives a 335i SE Coupe that he bought from new 6 years ago (304ps, I believe). He and I see no issue in the differences and he is very complimentary about the 20mph to 80mph acceleration of my 335d and the ride quality/handling balance of my adaptive suspension on 19" run-flats (he said much better than his SE suspension on 18"s). Whilst I was never daring to compete in a noise term, he said politely said it was decent. Obviously we know why that might be but if that's the sound I hear whilst driving, it matters little outside. IMO, nearly all the F3x engines are good and serve their purpose well, be that initial cost, power or economy. Certainly the 335i and 335d (and 330d for those preferring 2WD) are such great cars that no driver should feel the need to justify his/her (are they any women on this forum?!) purchase decision.

As you say, all the F30 engines are peaches in their own right. |

About 45 minutes or so in it. We used to drive the Chunnel down through central France across the border at Perpignan then down the Med Highway....but after several years the three day drive starts to wear thin, hence we now take the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander and spend a day on board getting pissed instead Not only that, the cost of the bloody tolls now is so high and so frequent, and by the time you factor in two hotel stops each way it's actually cheaper on the ferry. That's bloody good. On such a short commutes I was unable to get more that 20mpg on my e92 335i, so that was one of the reasons I went for diesel. However it looks like I'm getting about 6mpg better economy on the same commutes so far.

Tested my mpg today for the first time from Glasgow to Manchester. Well impressed with the results. Had the speed limiter set to 80mph with 3 adults 2 kids plus a boot full of luggage.
