Doesn't it say it only engages when the seatbelt if off? I know when I open the door when parking, my seatbelt is still on. I would assume this shouldn't be an issue unless you like to remove your seatbelt prior to completion of parking.

The right side mirror is also programmed to dip so that you can see the curb on the opposite side. I'm not sure why they can't program the mirrror on the driver side to do the same thing. That feature helps me a lot when parking next to a curb. I don't need no stinkin' cameras. Just a mirror that dips. Cheap technology.

My wife's Volvo XC60 can dip both mirrors. I found dipping the left one strangely disconcerting, so I have my profile set to dip just the right one, as in a BMW.

I think you're correct. The hapless BMW staffer that I saw munge up a 335i's sport AT was unbelted. She was maneuvering the car in a parking lot.

From the sound of it, the AT sets its parking prawl. Something you don't want to do while the car is in motion.

It's a safety feature, I doubt it is meant for repeated use.

Yeah, It also jumps into park when you open the door, while still in D.

If it is the gearbox then it must be more than capable of stopping it during this situation repeatedly, otherwise BMW wouldn't do it.
I'm a big fan of BMW, but they do what's good for them -- not for you.

First off, they have this funky shifter -- one unlike any other standard PRNDL. So, they got to thinking, what happens if someone gets out of the car and forgets to push P -- an action UNLIKE ANY OTHER COMMON SHIFTER? The answer? The car rolls, and we get sued.

Let's send the engineers back to their CAD stations and get them to design an interlock.

That was it, the sum total of their concern.

As to the idea of whether or not they would do something the car wouldn't support over time, check out this thread in which I whine that they buried an "update" about ASS wear in the quick start guide. They picked a place they could bury the warning about ASS wear.

I´m gonna reviwe this thread and share what happened this morning:
Sat in the car, started it. Door open and no seatbelt, I put it in D and pressed the accelerator. Previously it has just clicked really loud and the car stops, but thats when u just release the brake and it´s about to start rolling but this time I was giving gas and it did NOT stop the car, it just sounded CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK the 2 meters I managed to drive, til I hit the brakes wondering wtf just got f-ed up. Seriously, is it harmless or does something really get screwed?

Unpleasant Safety Feature - Totally Fine

I had the same thing happen to me. I wanted to move my car about five meters down my (semi steep) drive way. I got in latched the door but didn't completely close it, didn't put the seatbelt on.

Foot on break > started engine > selected drive > released the break. Car started to roll forward then I felt and heard the grinding, it kep grinding until the car came to a stop. I read the message on the center display and put my seatbelt on, all was fine. This worried me so I called my local BMW dealer and questioned them about it, they said it was a safety feature and that their "shouldn't" be anything wrong. I took my car in anyway and it was here that the Master Mechanic explained in full detail what was going on.

-- Short answer --
This is a safety feature and it will NOT damage your F30 transmission park gear.

-- Long answer --
It is meant to happen. In the same way your hand break/e break ratchet mechanism works, the parck gear has a ratchet so that if P is activated while in motion it won't snap itself off. The p gear itself is not making the grinding sound and failing to engage, what we can hear is the ratchet buffering the gear engagement until you have stopped.

I wouldn't make a habit of allowing this to happen but if it does, it's totally fine.

Echoing what others have said about Top view.
It's great - I won't buy another car without it.
I figure by now it paid for itself in saving me from scratching the rims.

it may not be great for the trans but i doubt it damages anything that drastically. it's no different than people that shift from reverse to drive while the car is still rolling slightly. they design these components to take some abuse.

+1. It's better for the car to assume that there's an idiot at the wheel who doesn't know enough to fasten the seat belt and drive with the doors closed.
I always back my car into my tiny vintage 1938 garage. I have foam glued to the driver's side wall to protect the door when I open it too far, and to show me when the car is backed in enough to allow the garage door to close. I have to back up with the door open to accurately gauge when I'm in the right spot. So long as my foot is on the brake and I'm not too close to wall on the passenger side no problem, but if I am too far over it will go into park, forcing me to pull out and try again. It's a slight inconvenience, but not as inconvenient as having to fix a paint scrape.

Yep, it's an annoying "safety" feature. I've learned to just rely on the rear view camera with the parking lines enabled which actually works really well for me. The 6MT cars definitely don't do it - I had a 2014 F32 6MT before my 8AT F33 and I opened the door to back up all the time.

just don't drive your car. driving it causes excessive wear and eventually things will break. it's clearly a bmw conspiracy.

Although it's a problem that shouldn't even exist at all. But since BMW chose to put this "feature" (and I use that term loosely) in the AT models, it should be something that you can code and disable if you want to.

I'm not normally one to chime-in on these things, but I can't see why you'd want to manoever the car with the door open, I'd be worried about catching the leading edge of the door on something (I've seen it happen).

This has kicked in for me on once with the door on the 'catch', and once when I let the car roll back slightly after waiting for the garage doors to open (exit to the car-park is on a slope), so whilst I do agree that this is a bit nanny like if you just close the door when parking it won't happen.

Why not? I do it all the time. But then I also don't know what this weird park gear you guys are talking about.

Hello all.
There is no coding in E-SYS to bypass the parking button when the driver door is opened ?
