Keep my 2017 build order or change it to a MY2018?

Hi, I am a new member here since I put a build order for a MY2017 430i GC. Thinking all was fine and dandy I started thinking about what mods should I buy in the mean time to keep me entertained as I waited for the car to arrive. I found this great forum and was shocked to see a new MY2018 was just announced merely days since I had put my order in and $1,000 deposit for it. Now I am facing the dilemma of should I cancel my order and reorder the LCI.

Mind you, I live in Puerto Rico and there is only one authorized BMW dealer on the island. I have been in talks with my CA which at first was reluctant to change the order and finally told me that if I decided to go the MY2018 route I would lose my first $1,000 deposit, had to put another $1,000 for the new one plus they couldn't garantee the price because they don't know the new MSRP.

What do you think about my situation and do you think the changes to the MY2018 are worth the hassle? Also ,if there is someone from Puerto Rico that has done business with this dealer could chime in, it would be appreciated.

Not worth it imo get the 2017 and be happy unless you really like the the headlights or digital instrument cluster.

Yeah, what has me thinking about it is the fact that I would be receiving and therefore actually buying the vehicle (since I have only put the deposit down) on April, estimated date that has been given to me by the dealership. The MY2018 is expected to be available on March, so I would be have been waiting for a car so long for it to be outdated when I receive it plus I paid above MSRP for it. It is the only dealership that sells BMW in the island and they sell above MSRP. I can still hold payment of it through the bank though.

Sound like your MY17 will be at your dealer in April. The MY18 start production in March and will likely take much longer to get to your dealer.

Remember that while yes it will be "available" it will not get to you in March. Your dealer will be given an "allocation" for a production slot for the car to be built along with all the other dealers in the world, then add in shipping time to estimate the time to delivery.

Good point, its just that it is my first BMW I am paying for myself which I expect to own for a lot of years and don't want no regrets.

They are both amazing cars and you're going to be super happy with either one. :-)

It's just my opinion but for what it's worth I'd make your decision on the multifunction instrument cluster. The rest of the differences are IMO too small to warrant losing your deposit.

If you want the all digital instrument cluster than get the MY18. If not I'm not sure most people are going to be able to tell the difference between driving a 17 vs 18.

Update:

I decided to order the MY2018 and cancel my first order. At first the salesperson didn't want to pass my deposit to the new order. I decided to talk to the manager who was really cool about it all and did do it. They will contact me as soon as they can submit the order to pass by the dealer and build it.

Good choice in my opinion. Good things come to those who wait

That's great news that you got your deposit applied to the MY18.

How does it work in Puerto Rico, do you order with the US configuration options?

It looks like my dealer had two allocations for 440i's but nothing for 440i xDrive yet.

Yes, same as USA. The main difference is in pricing which here we have a steep tax on cars, especially luxury ones that exceed $44k. If its over that amount you have to pay about $11k plus 40% of the amount that exceeded. For example on my previous MY2017 build, the total came to about $47k and out the door negotiated price was $61k... yeah, it sucks. I have to be wise with the options because it adds up very quickly. Plus there is only one dealer on the island so negotiating is harder.

On your comment, you are talking about your dealer having allocations for MY18? As of yesterday (monday) my SA said they had nothing on the system yet alone an allocation.

Here is Canada the dealer quoting system went live yesterday for 2018MY and the Order system will be open today. Dealers have to have their March allocation orders in by Feb 2.

The Product Guide from BMW Canada says "The combination of 6WB Digital Instrument Display and 610 Head-up Display is temporarily restricted from the factory. Premium Package Enhanced will have the option of choosing either feature for March production. Please reference Product Order Guides for further details."

Unfortunately I had to order the head-up display for my wife's 440ix GC and hope the "temporary restriction" is removed before it goes into production.

Really annoying when they put restrictions on builds

Hope you get the heads up display as well.

I am waiting to hear back from my dealer in Puerto Rico as to when I can officially place my order, hopefully soon because I am getting desperate
