F30 335i Turbo pipe failure---common??
Hello out there.. my first post so I hope this finds the right people. I am the proud owner of my 3rd 335i. I bought a CPO 2014 335i currently has 48K miles. Mineral Gray w/M Sport All including Brakes and exhaust. In fact, While the car was in the shop to fix a vibration, I ordered the M Sport Exhaust and they installed with the carbon tips. Incredible! I love the car, I cant even explain this... however it has been in she shop probably 70% of the time I have had it. Most of it for various little vibrations that were there from the beginning and then a few that developed but nothing too major. However, I have now for the 3rd time had a repeatable "Catastrophic Powertrain Failure". The particular failure is the Turbo pipe. It apparently has either blown off, come apart or something "catastrophic". It sounds like a dull blow off noise and then alarms go off in the car. I completely loose power. When I press the throttle, it just gives a very deep dull belch and you don't really gain speed. However, this third time, the car surged a lot and the interior filled with exhaust fumes, very thick and heavy. I immediately called my local BMW dealer and pleaded for help and expressed displeasure. I cannot believe that I am going through this. This is the newest best BMW I have owned and apparently the most problematic. I told the dealer that I will not put up with this any more and that I want to discuss option with the dealership brass. Either way, I am not sure what caused this, especially for the third time. I am so blown away and upset that this was not corrected on the first time. Does anyone have a similar experience? Also, what about buying a car that has constantly been in the shop for a majority of ownership. Does anyone know if BMW has a policy regarding this? Any insight and advice is greatly appreciated. M

Well, you have warranty so take it in, get a loaner and get them to fix it. Nothing more than that. It kind of sounds like the charge pipe broke. Not a big deal as stock ones break. There is not a turbo pipe only the Cp and the pipe to IC. I would not sweat it at this point.

What will be the issue to get it fixed with CPO?
Is there any clue/sign of piggyback and/or ECU flash with the car? Stock HP should not cause turbo issues at that mileage, unless the stock components are pushed beyond spec with tune(which is pay to play). |

Wonder if @Hollywood248 misunderstood and it is really the charge pipe that blew. On a side note, why do so many posters list a different BMW on their profiles that sticks out on every post and does not match the one they are posting about. |

Just in general, most pipes after the turbo are called the turbo piping. You have the intake piping (no boost) and then the turbo or boost piping. It's the same thing.
I'm more surprised that OP has been on the forum for 2 years and hasn't heard of this piping breaking. If you don't upgrade, it'll happen again. And when it happens, you are basically driving your car without an intake filter, so you are sucking in all of the dust and crap in the air straight into your engine and turbo. Be careful with just letting it happen over and over. |

I installed the ER CP on my 435 N55 with only 2700 mi on the clock, not waiting for it to explode. Got a tune shortly after that & now have no worries of stock CP failure while running 4.5# more boost
