It's merely the noises your e46 steering made as well. It's just that there are no hydraulics to mask it. Silly man. |

Anyone know if they've finally figured out how to fix this issue? Got a service coming up, wonder if I should mention the steering rack clunk or just continue to live with it...

I finally convinced the dealers to replace the steering rack and that was done in July. Up to this date I have not experienced and further bumps/rattles through the steering (touch wood).
So hopefully it is fixed permanently. |

Any update? Mine was built on September 2014 (F30 320d) , After 3000 km starting to have "cluck" noise over speed bump, I drove to dealer have checked the noise was coming from steering rack,They told me there is no solution for this so I send an E mail to BMW HQ they told me there is a update part number for the rack which is improvement ,but not any mention about the noise, now I am waiting a part from Germany, Anyone actually solved this problem? Somebody said the noise disappear after change the tire from RFT to normal tyre because of softer sidewall will absorb the force Anyone?

As for RFT I changed them out to non RFT and it made little or no difference. Save your money

My Nov 2014 had the column replaced after 9 months and about 5k. It left the noise bairly audiable but within months it was as bad as it was initially.
I left the fault til its first service 1 year later, I reported the noise was back, and also that I had had 2x power steering faults since my last visit. They carried out the service, but held onto the car, they said that what they found ment the car was unsafe to drive, and that a new steering rack was on back order from Germany. My car was returned a week later. I didn't drive much for a week or so, but when I did I felt the car was not right. After a couple of weeks I rang my SA, I asked if they had carried out alignment , he said they had, but the car felt vague. I brought it back after about a month, and they carried out fine adjustment on the alignment and could find nothing else The car still feels like the steering wheel is connected to the front of the car by ropes. There is light feeling play Anyone else suffering this? I would prefer to have the knock, if I could have my feel back

Been knocking for over 6 months.. BMW refused to touch the car because of the "cheap" bilstein coilovers in it, really disappointing service and build quality from a long time customer stand point..

I've had a F30 335i for three years without any problems with steering rack noise. The only issues I've had are leaves in the interior fan blower and a sticky drivers door mirror that has just been replaced.

Has anyone had issues with steering rack replacement w/ aftermarket springs installed? I've been running H&R sports and I've just started noticing this sound coming from the front left.

I had a slight thunk on my 328i and had dealer check it out. The tech advised that one of the thrust control arm bushings was worn. When I installed my Dinan springs I installed new left & right thrust control arms...didn't solve the problem. Dealer ordered a new steering rack today, thankfully covered under CPO. I just saw this thread and I'm wondering if both steering column & rack need to be replaced due to the revision? My car has a production date of December 2011 so I'm sure it doesn't have any revised parts.

Rack replaced
I have a 2014 420d M-Sport
Went in for the first MOT and end of warranty check, i explained that i can hear a knocking noise coming from front wheels, I did get my local garage (the only time i havent taken it to BMW) to change my front brakes about 2 months ago... They couldn't diagnose the noise, felt I was fobbed off a bit, it needed 2 new front tyres and the service desk advisor told me to see if the noise continued putting it down to the tyres possibly!? Anyhows, i advised that i could still hear the knocking, went back in, i demonstrated the noise to a technician and got a call back saying there was a steering rack issue and it needed replacing. Car has covered 42k miles... Note was added to my paperwork to explain the knocking is because the pads were none OEM although my local garage who i've used for over 10 years states they are OEM. the noise isn't too bad anyway as i only ever happens once (either when i first stop going forwards or first stop going backwards).. |
