Really turned off by the ugly sound of the I-4 of the 328i, it almost sounds as bad as a 320d. Exhaust is OK but does not make it exciting enough. I know that on paper it does everything better than the N52 but for me the sound is a huge part of the BMW experience... Lost a lot of soul in the process...

I love my M3 sound as much as the next guy, but its sound is irrelevant to the F30 3 series sound comparison

Still not as exciting as the '08 R32, the sound of the exhaust combined with the VR6 was something else.

By that reasoning, then might as well post up a Ferrari with a Tubi exhaust since we're talking about a different priced car anyway. Hence my point that posting the exhaust clip of anything that's in a different price segment is irrelevant. Not only is the M3 in a different price range, it's not even a similar displacement.

I hate the M3 sound - it sounds like an old man's fart. /ducks down

Here is a good sounding v8 (Ferrari F430):

From the interior though..

The exhaust is not that loud unless wide open throttle and from the interior its subdued. BMW puts a little valve control on the exhaust to close off one of the pipes unless you hit wide open throttle. At start-up however both pipes are open for emission control reasons. This is regardless of the model.

Some people prefer a little noise than whisper quiet. This one sounds like what I hear every morning:

Absolutely, mine is about to hit $150k miles mark and still gives 24 mpg and still has good power. However, that said - I absolutely can't wait to get my F30 335i Picking it up in Deutchland on March 2nd

N20 328i fixed

I kid. Come on guys, the N20 is not really THAT bad. Are we piling up on the 328i this early? Most of us haven't even "heard" these cars in person.

Plus, at least with the f30 328i, there is a fair trade-off to dropping the I6 and the sporty, deep-note exhaust. What you loose in engine/exhaust sounds, you supposedly gain in more precise cornering, lighter front end, MPG's AND you get to keep the 8 speed auto trans, unlike e90 328i. With the e90 328i, it's a loose-loose-loose when compared to the e90 335i. Inferior exhaust, same dead weight, similar gas mileage and that crappy auto transmission.

328 does sound bad. Im sure the Performance Exhaust would liven that up quite a bit.

I thought it was the opposite. I thought the valve was closed during startup to allow the cats to heat up faster.

The N52 sounds are better than the N20, much more solid...but the N55's exhaust note is just sex

Yes after 20 seconds or so

The valve will kick in and RPMs will drop and then it gets quieter.

at the end of the day, the 328i sounds and therefore looks like a shiny big dick with no balls lol

The N20 Sound at the beggining of the video sounds just like my central vac at home in the garage, no joke.
