I’ve just bought a 328i - Should I be worried?
Hi guys,
I’ve asked elsewhere but I thought I’d ask in the Aus forum since this is where I live.....my wife and I just bought a 2013 328i GT and while we love the car, I’ve spent all weekend stressing about the quality of the engine after reading horror stories about the timing chain in these motors! Should I be worried? Did Australia get an extended warranty on the timing chain and oil part chain like elsewhere in the world? Has anyone done over a 100k on these motors? I don’t plan to modify the engine as it will be the wife’s car but I’m concerned about the motor and and don’t know if I should cancel the sale and look for a newer (says they changed parts from jan2015) model? Please help! G. |

The only thing I've read about is the steering rack issue which would have been noticeable by now.
You have the N20 engine which I believe came out in 2011 so it would be a very common engine. I would think as long as it has been maintained you should be fine. If your worried purchase an extended warranty or as you say get a newer one. The B48 is the next engine which came out in the 330i, as you say 2015 onwards. 2013 is the first build which can always have some teething problems but there are a lot of 328i drivers on here who are very happy. Maybe ring BMW with the VIN and see what the service history has been. maybe everything that needed fixing has been fixed. What sort of kms are we talking? |

Have had my N20 for over 25,000 kms as a daily driver and I'm happy to report that I have had no issues whatsoever!

mate the 328i engine is absolutely bulletproof.just keep a bottle of engine oil handy incase you have to top up between services. 1 m3 and 2 328is in family no issues. One of the 328i has 130k on it and the only thing that has ever gone wrong with it was a right mirror failure.

Speaking of modifying anyone in Aus use the bimmercode app? I wouldn’t mind adjusting a few things on both cars....do you need to buy a cable or just that thing that plugs in?
And do you leave it plugged in always? Sorry just new to this and don’t want to stuff it up! |

I had a MY14 328i which I put on 80k km from new. I had a tune from 2k km. I serviced it every 15k instead of the factory 25-30k.
No major issues at all. I didn't drive the car hard at all though and used the launch control maybe twice. |

I have a 2014, bought it ex-demo with 3,000 klms.
That same week I installed a JB1. I service it every 15,000 klms using Amsoil Full SAPS oil (European Classic) and genuine BMW oil filter. It now has just under 80,000 klms and has been flawless. I wouldn't worry at all if you maintain it correctly. |

I have a 328i I bought new in 2012. It's fitted with JB4 (set to map 2) and catless DP. Had that setup for a few years now. No problem. Thankfully never had a problem with the 328i. It goes - and very, very well I might add. Ballistic performance in Sport with DS engaged. Only minor 'issue' I have is with the loud Bosch injectors noise. Let your wife enjoy the car and you, my good man need to de stress.
