So... 8 speed auto 320i gets 23/33 @ 180 hp
and 8 speed auto 335i gets 23/33 @ 300 hp

seems a tad...stupid.

It's not about the MPG of the 320, it's already class competitive. It's the $4k in MSRP being saved. This isn't about debating the other models. This is a great way of stealing the $33k ATS and other's thunder. It means it gets the magic $299 lease.

It's speculation on our part, re: the BMW line-up vs the Audi line-up. As you point out the A4 does not come with a 3.0T (not in the US) but we were speculating that it would be part of the next-gen A4 offering (MY2015, when the 3-series is due for LCI)

My bad, so there is...
But no official announcement today.

Odd, but maybe they are saving news for each day...?

Thats pretty cool. I mean I know alot of people want to keep the BMW brand more exclusive, but thats what the 6 and 7 series is for. After all they have to compete with Audi and Mercedez they both have a 3 series competitor starting in the low 30's.

Anyway nevermind the 320i I wanna know whats that next to it ?

to me that's the 4 series coupe, from the enlarged air intakes. Probably under cover on the stand until it was officially unveiled during the BMW press conference.

Its all about lease payments not MPG...60% of new BMWs are leased so they see a difference of $50-100 between a 320i and a 328i as more sales. Makes perfect economic sense.

I am surprised that it's not coming with any of the available lines.

EUREKA:

The 4-cylinder 180 hp engine is a gateway engine- its too expensive to sell at $33,000.

Specs: 4-cylinder, 180 hp, 200 lb-ft, 23-33 mpg.

Now substitute in the new 3-cylinder engine they've been preparing.

Specs: 3-cylinder, 180 hp, 200 lb-ft, 35-45 mpg.

Same horsepower, 50% better mileage.

Guess what will be introduced in 2015 or so.

I am surprised to hear this, I was not expecting but when i think more throughly it is not really surprising. Bmw used to have 2.5 I6 engine with 184 hp and people were buying it. Than the I6 got more and more power. Least powered 3 series became 240hp with F30. Yes in rest of the world cars get more and more power with advanced technology and small engines with turbos. The base 3 series in the world, 316i went from 105hp to 135hp in last 10 years. Thats a 30% increase.

However, US went opposite we started to see small hatcbacks with 4 bangers. Less V8`s etc. More concern of fuel consumption.

if you look at this picture Bmw definetly needs something around 180hp to fill the gap. Probably they didn`t want to introduce a third engine or didn`t want to offer a 4 cylinder engine hwile all bmws were 6 or 8 cylinders. But now it is the same engine and they already break the rule with N20 so no more barriers. For sure 320i will increase the sales of 3 series.

People who think 320i has the same consumption with 335i are mistaken with the EPA numbers. In real life I am sure there will be difference. If you look at the Europe numbers there is significant fuel consumption diffference between 335i and 320i.

I am happy because my 328i is no more the base 3 series but I paid 3k more for the same engine

The "i" is for gas engines, "d" for diesel.
yes I know that. 5000 still seems too low for a gas engine. gas mileage sucks. but i guess when you cut the power to a certain extent it has to work to carry all that heft.

What frustrates me most is that my 2002 325Ci had 184hp, a top speed of 130 mph, accelerated to sixty in...you guessed it 7.1 secs, and got around the same mileage. At least in that car you got the silky smooth inline six.

It does not get around the same mileage. EPA figures for the E46 and F30 are quite a ways apart. Also do not forget about torque.

No offense to anyone,
but why are we talking about mpgs?

Simple rule of thumb: if you can't afford gas, you can't afford a BMW at all.
