HUD - Speed limit info?
Quick question.
Since deciding to push my MY2013 M Sport purchase from August to November (waiting for new iDrive), I have also contemplated getting the Heads Up Display (a $1500 option in Canada). Quick question - does the posted speed limit info work in the US and Canada? I was told that it only works in Europe. The only reason why I'm thinking of getting this option is so that I can always know exactly how fast I am driving (as I like to drive relatively "sporty" = fast), and to have a constant read on limit + current speed. This would allow me to keep my eyes on the road (to watch out for cops) and not keep looking down at the speedometer. Any HUD users that can comment (is it worth it)?

Now that I've gotten used to the HUD, I'd never want a car without it.
I didn't opt for the Driver Assistance Package (I believe it was $750 in the 2012), so I don't have the speed limit info. I kind of wish I did now.

Anyone know for a fact that the Driver Assistance Package is what will flow through the speed limit to the HUD?

The HUD I love, dont ever want a car without it. I love using the Nav on the HUD and passengers are clueless because I have Nav muted and iDrive screen on media.
I think the speed limit info is done by using the camera to detect speed limit signs. I could be wrong as I did not opt for this option but I remember reading it somewhere.

Speed Limit Display uses a combination of a camera located in the front of the rear-view mirror (which can read road signs, temporary road signs and gantry signs) plus information stored in the navigation system about speed limits.
I'm finding it to be pretty accurate and very quick to respond. A couple of days ago I was driving on a dual carriageway and the Speed Limit Display was showing 70mph. I slowed down to enter a section with road works and there was a 40mph sign propped up either side of the road. As I passed the signs, the display changed to 40mph... neat

but you definitely need the Speed Limit Info option (8TH) to display the speed limit in the HUD, correct? Meaning - without 8TH, it won't simply display the speed limit basd on what the GPS feeds it?

Yes that is correct, which is why I don't like that BMW isn't showing it on the navigation anyway... They are probably aware that a lot of users would be happy with the nav showing speed limit info and would therefore not purchase the HUD option-- so they decided to just hold out the information that we already SHOULD have by purchasing navigation...

would be cool if you could set the cruise control and your car adjusts to speed limits. now i just need someone to steer...
for the morning only of course. i'm just so tired i don't feel like driving at all for 40 miles. after work on the way home i would drive. |
