H&R Sport Springs on XDrive = Blown shock already
Hi guys, here's a 2 month post install update on H&R Sport springs on 2013 Xdrive 335. Hit a few potholes as usual, nothing crazy and already front wheel is slightly bent and 1 shock completely blown (leaking fluid). For whatever it's worth I have the adaptive suspension.
If you live somewhere where the roads are crappy and decide to use these springs, I would recommend matching shocks.

I can't believe h&r sells these without letting ppl know that they should not be used without proper shocks! These should only be used with matching shocks and struts

If you hit a pothole hard enough to bend your wheel and it blows a strut, that has very little to do with the spring manufacturer.

Here's the thing, with these springs every pothole you run into feels like the biggest in your life. Not sure if I will put them back on even though the car looks spectacular with them on.

Not sure to be honest. I imagine selection gets even narrower with adaptive suspension.

Not exactly. On my way to work there are a few uneven spots in the pavement. With the stock suspension they are hardly felt, with the H&R springs it feels like it bottoms out hard.

I imagine so. I ran aftermarket Tein springs on my 2006 civic and Eibachs on my 2009 G37S with OEM shocks and never blew anything. Both saw over 60k miles and Canadian winters and all kinds of potholes and rough conditions. Now I'm all paranoid with the 335.

Did you change the springs on your 335?

Was considering it but now I'm having second thoughts. I dont want to be slammed, I just want a moderate/light drop.
Might end up getting coil overs and have them set at the highest setting but it kind of defies the purpose. I'd consider the M-Perf suspension but it's "not compatible" with X-drives.

Basically, I am sure a Sport spring will REDUCE the life of your stock struts-that is to be expected. But dying a death like this-it's a bit of an abnormality-everything has a breaking point. The fact that you bent a wheel, means it was a pretty hard impact.

I'm not in a rush because I wouldn't drop my car until after winter either way, but I still wish there were some clear options out there for our cars ! I don't know why BMW wouldn't make a sportier suspension available for the X-Drives. If the X-drive suspension parts have the same part numbers as the base suspension parts then it means that the M-performance parts should fit... Going to check that out.

Part numbers are different. It's a one digit difference but still different lol. No, I don't have the M-Adapative suspension, but my brother does and we're both seeking to slightly lower/stiffen the ride.

I have my H&Rs mixed with non RFTs, so perhaps it would be far worse.

Adaptive dampers are very tied into the other parts and systems on the car, and mechanically optimized for the stock set up to a high degree (meaning the designed lengths, oil volumes, gas pressures, ride heights, not necessarily 100% optimum tuning). Modifying cars with adaptive suspensions is a risk. You could screw up the what the sensors are reading, or cause the damper to run at higher pressures than normal. It might all work fine . . . until it doesn't.
Even aftermarket shock manufacturers have no clue how adaptive dampers work, or what the design limits of the OEM stuff are, let alone a spring maker like H&R. Now, more than ever before, you modify at your own risk. Last edited by Racer20; 11-26-2013 at 09:17 PM.. |

I would have to disagree. H&R does quite a bit of R&D, as do companies like Dinan, Eibach, etc. To suggest that they just coil up some metal with guesstimates sounds a bit myopic.
