Why not?

The 3er GT will showcase lessons learned with the 5er GT.
3er GT is much lower and sleeker than the 5er GT.
The brief for the 3er follows the same as the 5er GT travelling in style but add the word (fast!) for the 3er.

Customers for the 3er GT are entirely different from the 5er GT, especially with the car being a 3er in which the customer expects the best Premium entry Sports sedan when they get behind the wheel of a 3er.

The front end is something similar to this except the GT bloodline allows the headlights to follow the form of the 5er GT and turn upwards at the corners. but the overall shape is more flatter and angular like the rendering.
The car has a high belt line which completely wraps around the car , like the second illustration this allows the roof to be lower and sleeker.

The 3er GT is coming due to the response of the 5er GT which has sold over 20,000 units since it's introduction late last year, highly significant for a low volume premium product. In the US. The 5er GT has already eclipsed over two-years Combined sales of the 5er Touring since it's North American introduction earlier this year.

This rendering by (Jon Sibal?) gives a very good indication of how the car is progressing. This shape is is very much similar to the outline of the car and how it fits within the 3er portfolio. If you focus on the outline and not the detail you can see how the car can carry the M3 badge. Think of the CS Concept shrunk down for the premium entry segment and you get the BMW 3er Gran Turismo.

It is known as Progressive Sports Coupe.

I really like the 5GT, it's much better than the X6 that's for sure! I reckon the 3GT, while a bit loopy like the 5GT, could be really good.

This M3 hatch stuff is kinda just wrong. I get that the hatch version is successful and thats great, but its the opposite of the M3s mission of performance. Lets not dilute the M name further and instead do 340iX GTS or something. All wheel drive turbo sport wagon/hatch thingy.

No likely.

Please make a rear window that we can see out of *without* having to use an electronic back-up camera.

What do all these new designs (from multiple car manufacturers) emphasize form to the detriment of function? I don't want high belt-lines and reduced visibility at the rear. I want sleek AND functional.

Great post, but i feel like bmw is bs-ing us here in the states.

It would be interesting to see actual figures of the gt. im sure those figures are low, and that doubling the sales wouldnt be a hard task since numbers are so small.

that statistic almost becomes meaningless without actual figures because its easy to double a small number like 100 or 200, compared to other models that sell a few thousand each year.

im sure that statistic doesnt tell the full story here in the states

I have to completely agree with you. I drive about 75k miles per year, and I have only seen one 5er GT on the road, and that happen to be a new one, I saw tonight on my way home.
