Programing and Silencer

A note from somebody who has had a lot of cars lately. Exhaust is nothing more than a "noise" preference. Todays cars will not see any noticeable gains in HP nor torque. Same with intakes. Forced induction, blowers and turbo, will not see much gain and in fact, may see a loss in torque (with an intake, exhaust seems to have to effect)

It is all about the noise under the hood.....

Plug any exhaust you like the sound of and enjoy the ride.

If you want more oomph, then get a tune. You do not need any exhaust nor intake for a moderate tune.

You're totally right! Only exhaust sound, but "sound" is an important part of drive feeling

There are tens of third party exhaust silencers available in the market and the choices are very wide. Akrapovic was among choices before ordering for M Performance Silencer. However, if BMW dealer discovers any third party item installed, the warranty will be voided.

Hi Guys,

BMW have replaced my 339 with a 340!

Gio72, many, many thanks for highlighting the issue, and I'm sorry I was so skeptical before; having now heard it 'in the flesh' the difference is just night and day.

The guys at my dealership compared the two on the shop floor, they said what stood out straight away was just how much bigger the bore is on the 340 version:

(340 is the top one in the above photo)

(compare to the 340 at the bottom of that photo)

They were really surprised that this was the 'US' version, as the thinking was emissions and noise regulations are much more stringent, so couldn't be sure why BMW had originally only shipped the 339 version in the EU.

Anyhow the sound....

Old (339):

New (340 - not even close to 'bed-in' yet)

Can't believe how good it sounds with basically zero miles on it, if it beds in like my last one did, it's going to sound epic in ~1500 miles time!

I'm happy for you and I'm happy for me!!!!
Cold start now reminds me the old brutal sound of the MPE of my old E91 335xi!!!

Haha that's an awesome coincidence! it was just yesterday I picked it up from the garage.

Glad to hear you are sorted - it's such a massive difference when it was fired up with the new exhaust on, really justifies the 'M Performance' bit now I feel :-)

Hey guys, the dealer did my install before I picked up the car, from the videos though it seems like I have the 339. How can I confirm this?

There is metal plate on the bottom of mine that includes the part number. If you slide under the back of the car you can read it.

When you guys say 'replace' your 339 with 340, are you doing this under warranty? Just curious how to approach my dealer (what to say) as I bought my car back in Apr of this year.

Thanks... It's a 340!!! Phew. That means I just need to wait for it to break in. 1200 km on it so far. Excited after watching the videos on here

First cold start with my new MPE, sounded amazing even though it's not broken in. Little on the loud side with my garage closed lol

You have the #340: this is the only choice in USA

Congratulation to Gio72 and GR_G for the replacement. It is a great pleasure to find both of you happy and satisfied with the US version.
With reference to video footages, there seems to be a significant difference between these two versions. I am thankful to you for posting these two footages and for giving us an opportunity to experience the difference between them and distinguish the sporty tone. In fact, our dealer's part manager said the US version of exhaust system has been dispatched from Germany and will reach within one week from now.
Well, you do you remember that our main concern was related to the exhaust when riding the car, not when accelerating it while stationary. Hereby, I will be very glad if you can shoot drive-by scenes in order to have better experience for the US version.

Did you observe any difference between these two versions in terms of loudness? You might be aware that audio recording may not be too helpful to measure the loudness.

Yes, the 340 is louder, in every situation: cold start (much louder!), warm revving and drive-by.
Anyway, it is not on the same level of the old MPE of E99/93 335i, because our cars do have the central resonator, while the old coupè was without it...

Is it possible to take this resonator off? Is it going to be safe for the car or detrimental?

Yes, there's also a 3D on the removal of the resonator. But you would have problem with the official warranty, but it depends on the relationship with your dealer.
It's absolutely safe: it is just a sound limitator.

I have the 340 on my 335i and I am very happy. Sounds mean on cold start up. Has an aggressive sound while driving but no drone. I have had many compliments from other drivers. When someone rolls down a window to say how good it sounds...must be doing something right!

I followed my car while my wife was driving it. The burble and pops sound really good. I admit that the exhaust is not really noticeable in the car while driving at higher revs...however when driving behind it while she was accelerating fairly hard the exhaust sounded loud and proud!

As far as the European version of the exhaust being installed in the car, the output of this exhaust is poor and performs below our expectations. In fact, we do get some sporty tone when setting the car mode to sport or sport+ mode and displacing the gear into manual position, other than this the exhaust has no output at all. Is it the same case for the US version or is it a different story. Does the US exhaust perform well even the car is set to comfort mode?
