What are the standard features available when plugging the iPhone into the adapter?

Will I be able to select music from the idrive menu? Make hands free calls?

Also am I able to use the standard apple USB cable for the iPhone integration instead of the iPhone adapter?

Depending on the version (capabilities) of iDrive that you have, you have you should be able to use the standard USB cable for iPhone integration to select and play music. I don't know about hands free calls.
