Best compact SUV?

Best compact SUV with good long term liability for $30-40k? Can be new or slightly used.

Top contenders are Lexus NX 200t and BMW X1. The RX is nice and really comfy but out of the budget.

This is for the parents so I prefer it to be reliable and not having to shell out $$$ to repair or fix long term.

Parents are not fans of Subaru. It really is a good bang for the buck though.

Grand Cherokee 4x4 Limited. We liked it much better than anything on the market.

How's the reliability on Jeeps? Brother looked at it few years ago before going with Mazda. Jeeps seem to have lower mpg than other vehicles in the same class.

This is my concern. Thus I'm leaning a bit more heavily toward Japanese cars.

Could be a good option. Just a bit concerned about long term reliability as we've never had a German SUV before.

Jeep literally makes some of the shittiest, most unreliable pieces of shit on the market today. Consistently dog shit.

+1/2

CRV for trouble-free. Was on our list until we went for an X3 28xdrive instead with extended warranty and maintenance.

Might wanna check out the CRVs cousin, the Acura RDX in the CPO lineup.

The NX is a size larger, somewhere between say a X1 and X3 or Q3 and Q5.

No X1 for older folk, ride is rock hard, maybe the new one is better not sure but the old one was fun to drive but stiff as a board.

Lexus makes sense on many levels, or maybe RDX. The Infiniti is absolutely tiny inside.

CRV is a fine vehicle but Pathfinder??? It's two sizes larger.

CRV size wise is similar to the Rogue, Murano is next then the land yacht.

CRV is the answer but I thought they were looking at premium badges only.

I was just saying what popped in my head which I know are reliable.

And he shouldn't be spending so much on them, as I believe he is the one buying and I think is the same one who hasn't bought his own place yet.

He should get one for his girlfriend/fiance too. They can keep it in their shared garage?

The CPO cars come with extended warranties. From the BMW website: "BMW Certified Pre-Owned: Covers you for 2 years/50,000 miles* whichever comes first, after the expiration of the 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks – 2016 Models (Valid only in the U.S.A. including Puerto Rico) for a total of 6 years/100,000 miles.* For Certified Pre-Owned vehicles retailed on or after January 1, 2014, up to 6 years of BMW Roadside Assistance and BMW AssistTM Emergency Call, which includes Automatic Collision Notification, and TeleService are included."

I've had BMW since 1988 and haven't had problems with any of them. My son "bought" 2 of them from me and put an extra 150k miles on them and he had no problems either.

A CPO car is going to cost you/them an extra $1500 or so over a similar non-CPO car, but you can still get an X3 within your 30k budget.

Go drive one and you will be done with your shopping
