The Munich crush is interesting. Actually I don't get it although some posters on this site seem to be transfixed with that city for some reason.

My understanding is that South Africa and Regnesburg Germany are the "best" plants--JD Power ratings and low failure incidence, etc.--but who knows?

In any event I wouldn't fret over Munich. Seems childlike.

Two reasons off the bat: 1) capital of Bavaria, 2) BMW world headquarters. Love that city. And don't forget the Hofbräuhaus

11th digit is F. Did ED. It's cool to have German built vehicle but SA is the same build and it is not inferior in quality.

Interesting that. Don't know if this anecdote makes it any more true, but I ordered a custom 335i, and the VIN I received today says Regensburg. All good either way. =)

BMW 3 Series Coupes and Convertibles as well as M3 variants and BMW Z4 are manufactured exclusively in Regensburg.

I have found several tables through a Google search purportedly showing a way to decipher the plant code. Most of them are dated, circa 2007 or older.

Here is one, about a year old. But even with this one, the author cautionsus that it may be outdated and/or inaccurate:

A,F,G,K = Munich, Germany
B,C,D = Dingolfing, Germany
E,J = Regensburg, Germany

Can anyone update this information or clarify what's going on for us?

It would be interesting to see new results by plant, but I'm assuming the vast majority of 3s made to date were built in Munich. No?

the online bmw population is nowhere near the world bmw population. Most people who do have issues will come online first. The rest are BMW enthusiasts (don't know how big it is vs the bmw world population). That said i think most people regard munich bmws since its bmw world headquarters and maybe i heard (the robotics in Munch were state of the art.) who knows though. This is all just fluff, all BMW have the utmost QC!
