The focus on US-market diesel will be the showcase at the NAIAS in Detroit 2013.

I was thinking it could be at the LA Auto show as lots of new green cars are revealed there.

hey scott, is the 3 series diesel still slated for the detroit show? when you say "actual launch next summer" do you mean it will be available to order or cars will be arriving in the summer?

Sure hope a 4 cylinder diesel is offered. I have a VW Golf TDI in addition to my 328i and I love the diesel. I don't intend to replace my 3 series at the end of my lease unless a dieselis available.

the 328d will be a single turbo 4 cylinder 2L diesel. ie it will be the european 320d but NAs can't handle the idea of buying a 320d so the rumour is bmw is re labeling the 320d as a 328d. 180ish hp. let's hoping there will be a manual option.

Manual 328d
I believe that stupid, stupid BMW only plans to offer it with an automatic in the U.S. market. Do they not know their core constituency? May not be a majority but the brand kudos stems from them.

There is no 25d engine offered in europe (as of now) on the f30 platform. So, it is either a: - detuned 330d engine (unlikely, 6 cylinder engine), - a completely new 4 banger 25d engine labeled as 328d for NA (possible but unlikely), or - existing 320d 4 banger with boosted power to label as 328d in NA (325d in Europe). The 320i is selling well in canada and so should a 320d do if introduced in that market. r, |

But there is already a 125d and 525d, with 4-cylinder Diesel and 218 PS / 450 NM. It has two turbos, one large one (for higher revs) and one smaller one (for lower revs).
I think it's highly inlikely that BMW will invent something new just for the F30. Edit: I have read somewhere that it will be introduced in Europe in March 2013 in the F30, and close the Gap between 320d and 330d.

makes sense, though looking at BMW official announcement late summer: "One is a 2.0L single-turbo twinscroll 4 cylinder direct injection diesel engine outputting 180 HP and 280 LB-FT torque. The other diesel will be a 3.0L twinscroll 6 cylinder turbo outputting 255 HP (no official torque number yet, but expect 400+ lb-ft torque)" it doesn't necessary mean that those engines will go into the f30, it will be interesting to see which one to be labeled a 328d! . |

I'd love to see the 180hp/280tq 320d here in the States. I can't imagine what that would be like when paired with the 8-speed auto.
And I think if BMW brought two diesels they should slot below each gasoline model: Diesel 4-cylinder: 325d Gasoline 4-cylinder: 328i Diesel 6-cylinder: 330d Gasoline 6-cylinder: 335i Last edited by Mahzari; 12-29-2012 at 02:05 PM.. |

My dealer stated that a 2.0L, four cylinder will be sold as the 328d as both an F30 and F31 but no word yet on three pedal availability on either. I figure the odds of a 328d F31 are about the same as Kim and Kanye's kid being named Bill.

The previous info was that an approx. 184ps 4-cyl and 258ps 6-cyl will be available in the US. Oh but wait, those already exist in Europe as 320d and 330d... Given that the 328i churns out 245ps (claimed), what are the odds of the 328d being the 184ps 4-cyl?... And then what would the 6-cyl be called?! The most natural given the power outputs would be to label those 2 engines 320d (4-cyl) and 328d (6-cyl) in the US

BMW has already confirmed new 6-cylinder diesels for the US market, in addition to 4-cylinder, but it's not clear which vehicles. X3 is rumored to get the 30d, as is the new 3-series touring, which would be perfect.
