rock chip on the hood.. what to do?

found a rock chip today.. about 2mm across by 6mm long. all the way through the paint, bare metal exposed.

what would you guys do - diy or take it in? i'm horrible at paint - anything more than a touch-up stick and i'm likely to f*ck it up. any idea how much a pro fix costs?

it's not super visible despite being a black car, but i'm more worried about rust.

Dr color chip should make this an easy repair. Their process will avoid the raised bump of traditional touch up paint.

Usually the dealer repairs the paint chips for about $75. I wouldn't use touch-up paint.

Sorry to hear about the rock chip. at least it was something naturally occurring, not some idiot that decided to rest their door on your car. The natural or self-inflicting wounds are the easiest (not easy) to get over. Unlike the ones that occur from the negligence and/or the pure stupidity of others.

That being said, I have used the BMW Touch-up paint kit to have had very good results, to where I can't see the spots much unless I am really looking for them. You could try that at first, and if it doesn't suit, you could do something else more drastic.

The key is taking your time with the touch up, assuring that its a fairly clean surface, applying the paint layer at a time, making each layer set and dry, and slowly building it up to the surface of the existing paint, and then once all dry, finish with the clear sealant.

Alternatively, you can consider getting a clear car bra if the roads you used daily are crap. Refer to this thread

Or have a old skool heavy duty car bra! Looks awful though!

The hood on the F30 is aluminum. While it can oxidize, it doesn't rust to perforation like steel would so I wouldn't worry too much about rust. Just touch it up with dealer paint sticks and call it a day.

My god, these are so ugly, they should be illegal.

OP, just touch it up and move on, there will be others for sure.

best tip I received from my detailer: Use a toothpick to apply some touch up paint. Start small until you build some confidence. I couldn't believe how good of a job I did after about 10min.

Whatever you do - do not use the horrendous little brush that usually comes with the touch up paint. I dont know what genius came up with those but they are shiiiiite!!
