2016 340 breaking/"old school maintenance '
I am a newbie so forgive my inexperience ....
Just heard my 340 is on a ship .... I think I will take delivery at the PDC mid May. I need advice on proper breakin. I have read the manufactures recommendations as well as "follow what the computer says" stuff. Save me from searching the forum .... I am am looking for top 3 -5 items to put on priority list for the first 3000 miles / 90 days both inside and out (mechanically, cosmetically, etc). Also - I keep seeing " old school" maintenance being referenced.... what is it? If there is a thread on this please point me in the right direction. Words of wisdom greatly appreciated.

Look up the email address for mike miller from Roundel magazine it's the official mag of the BMW CCA, ask him to email you a copy of his old school maint program.
As for top things, if you plan on keeping the car, you'll want to do a oil change, and transmission fluid flush and diff oil extraction and refill after 1200 miles. BMW says they are lifetime and that's bullshit. They pay to do that for M cars but somehow on non M cars they don't suffer from having metal particles in fluid during the initial break-in period. Right.

They do the diff on the M cars because it's a clutch type electronic LSD with no filter mechanism. Any clutch LSD will require a breakin flush. A open diff doesn't need this. They don't change the transmission fluid at the 1200 mile service. I agree 100% on lifetime fluids being B.S. but you dont need to flush the tranny until at least 40k unless your quite literally racing it. There's not much material on the clutchpacks they don't wear in much at all. |
