Wow this is disconcerting. I would expect that in a Hyundai or Suzuki, but a BMW? Shame!

You need to keep in mind that every car company has a supply chain that wraps half the globe.

All it takes is one guy in one of the factories in China to forget to check the ratios on one of the paint ingredients for stuff like this to happen months down the road.

I design products for a living (at the company that invented Six Sigma) and you'd be surprised how many defects end up being because somebody in a factory just forgot to follow one of the process documents. A part gets molded at too high of a temperature, doesn't cool off for long enough, etc - then stuff like this happens.

It's good that BMW will fix it though - they most likely have to replace the entire stereo unit.

That's what I call a well thought out, logical and objective post. Well done!

Ongoing touchkey saga

Hey all. I'm the one who started this thread. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had this problem.

The whole keypad assembly was replaced by the dealer at NC with no arguments about four months ago.

All was well until last night and I noticed the same thing happening to my number '2' key. The same cracking of the paintwork around the numeral. Oh bugger.............

The ironical thing is that it is one of my least used keys. BMW obviously haven't rectified the problem. Back to the dealer

My number 1 is developing a thin "white" ish crack across the button horizontally too.
I wonder if this is how it starts?

That's true (..and good memory). Maybe that's why I never have interior trim wear/tear issues.

Just have your dealer replace them.
I've replaced so many things for free for my old E92, such as SOS button, steering cover, seat belts, door handle trim and etc due to the vinyl chipping.

There were so issue at for asking the replacement.

I have a 2011 F10 535 , and this was a common issue on the early build ones. So common in fact that BMW made a special replacement kit just for the buttons.

Same issue. My number 1 button developed a crack. It's not bad enough to go to the dealer yet, but I wonder if this is the beginning of a slippery slope.

I would personally wait until my warranty period is just about over and address everything at once. Will be on the look out for this when that day comes!

I'm going to be taking delivery of a 435 within a month or two. I know the dash assemblies are more or less the same. Let's hope I dont have to take this back to the dealership for a minor issue like this. Seems like a waste of time just for a cosmetic issue that should have come up in wear testing.

Are the head units not made by Harmon Kardon for BMW?
Could this be due to heat rather than wear and tear? As I've seen some of the rubber texture finishes peeling off on some of the US cars trims but have not seen it happen here in the UK.
