Same here. At first it would only happen at really high RPMs then after a few months it would do it ALL the time. If I gave it 2 seconds for the synchros to catch up 2nd would go in smoothly with no grind. BMW changed the gearbox no questions asked. Looks like it might be an issue with this transmission since there's at least 3 people with 2nd gear synchro problems just on this forum.
Guys this is the EXACT situation I am in.

2014 335xi 6 speed 5k miles

1-2 gear shift grinds

Brought into BMW and they are replacing the whole transmission.

Who else is dealing with this issue?

Seems like this is primarily an issue with xDrives?

We have at least two cars: 2012 335i and 2014 335i xdrive - both have issues with holding 1 to 2 gear Both are waiting for new transmissions. Now we'll use Motul transmission oil, maybe it help to protect synchros.
We also think that it will be good to change clutch, but it is made by warranty. The first car made 30k km, the second 20k km. F30 has bad manual transmissions, we need to shift slowly and carefully, especially 1 to 2 gear

Wow both your cars need new transmissions?

Is BMW changing the clutch on the cars under warranty?

What cracks me up are the manual gearbox purists that always claim "3rd pedal or no care", yet this is proving that as technology advances with DCT and ZF gearboxes, that the dated tech of a standard manual gearbox is being left behind.

Sucks something so simple is having manufacturing issues. Only explanation for such premature failure. Now hopefully it's catching the attention of BMW and they are investigating the problem.

Bmw excludes the clutch from its 4 year 50k mile warranty?

I thought everything was included except tires which I bought BMW insurance for.

The only piece that's remanufactured is the housing. The internals are new. By law BMW can't call it "new".

Good to know. Mine was replaced and is working fine, but when I asked BMWUSA to give me an extended warranty, they declined. Anyone out there who had this problem get any form of compensation?

I just received my car back after getting a new transmission due to bad synchros.

It drives great now. Let's hope for the best.

I still wouldn't hold onto the car after the warranty. Too much of a gamble and headache.

Ahhh our first purist stands forth.

It doesn't bother you that BMW can't make a proper manual gearbox that's been around since the start of the automobile lol?

I agree with you, mine drives fine but I will likely get rid of the car before the warranty ends. Too bad, I otherwise love the car.

Oh jeez, I know we have a ridiculously huge sample size here of 2s of 3s of people with issues with their manual gearboxes so I can totally understand why you would take this golden opportunity to use it as an argument as proof that BMW can't make a manual gearbox. I'm guessing you have not driven an F3x with a manual because if you had, you'd agree it's F-ing flawless, save for maybe too long of a throw. But what I would like to know, is why can't BMW make an "advanced" automatic as fun to drive as an archaic manual gearbox that's been around since bascially, as you mentioned, the invention of the wheel.

I hear you. I had a z4 35i with dct and was bored. It was only fun when I floored it. Now the 991 911 with the pdk transmission is a different story. It actually gives the driver some feel as it shifts and is flawless. Bmw needs to take the Porsche transmission as an example and work on the dct.

Yeah, statistically speaking, 2 cars out of the whole population on this site proves the manual is junk.

Get a grip, on a manual, you'll never look back.
