Ridiculous tire wear

I switched from Bridgestone RFTs to Michelin A/S 3+ tires last August. Just had a routine service done and was told by the service advisor that my rear tires will need to be replaced soon. At first I thought he is just trying to sell me some tires, but when I measured the tread at home it's down to 3/32"!! With only 6000 miles on them!! WTAF???

something is definitely wrong... especially with All season tires.

Since your car is still very new, i would start with the alignment first.

Were you tires worn evenly at least? if not, then you got your answer.

If it was evenly, then stop doing burn outs.

uh yeah, something is very wrong with this picture. Original S001s lasted 15k. 20k on current A/S 3+ and looks like 5 -10k left (RWD). Previous A/S 3s lasted 30k on an S4. Results may vary.

Yes they are worn evenly. Getting an alignment done next week.

If your tires are worn evenly then why waste good money on an alignment?

If they were worn evenly maybe you or someone else in the service department was doing burnouts as it's curious its on the rear tires.

My first tires only lasted about 10k KM.
During this period I went through 3 alignments, as something was off from the factory - it kept pulling to the right.

After a switch of tires and a final alignment everything settled to a more "normal" 20k km per tire set

He has an XDrive, might be quite difficult to do burnouts.

Had exact same tires, died prematurely here, too. But it was more like 15k miles. I was also a surprised...when I did the yearly state inspection and the guy said your tires are toast.

Went back to Discount Tire where I bought them, and they measured depth of all 4 tires in multiple places, then called Michelin to make the warranty claim. All were evenly worn. Ended up with about 50% off and purchased 4 more of the same tire. It was easy. Other than the short tread life, I love them.

Edit: actually had the prior version AS3, then replaced with AS3+. Was hoping these would last a bit longer, but maybe not.

That kind of tire life is more in line with the stock p zeros rft that came with my car. Let us know how it goes.

could be a suspension issue although I doubt it. just rotate your tires if you can and make sure they are balanced. the tires you have wear out quickly quickly... inspect the tires and make sure the tread looks safe to drive on rather then just measuring tread life. you are probably good to go for the next little while.

The fronts are only used when needed most of the time it's rear drive for fuel economy.

Yea, something is definitely wrong there...unless you're doing burnouts all the time, those should last you at least 12-15K and maybe more depending on your driving habits. Since it's still under warranty, I would have the dealer check out all four wheels alignment as well as check for any suspension issues.

Sure, I've got an xDrive too, but when you get on it the fronts do take some of the power, not sure how one does burnouts without the xDrive noticing and giving the fronts some juice.

If you bought a set of 4 tires they are more likely the same or similar date codes. I'd check the date codes on the rears. I suspect some shenanigans at the dealer.

You will be surprised. My tires are worn evenly and i would not have noticed that i had 3 times outside of the factor toe spec, if BMW had not done an alignment for me by accident for free

While his issue might not be alignment related but that is a good starting point (cost effective) to figure out why he only got 6000 miles out of them.

He does not want to get a new set of tires and only get 6000 miles again.

The tire shop contacted Michelin and they are going to replace the tires under warranty.
So, the fronts will now have about 6000 miles on them and 8/32" of tread, while the rears will be brand new. Is this kind of a difference acceptable?

I'd be OK with it. New tires are about 10/32", I think?

Did everything check out OK? Alignment, etc?
