Mazda6 2.5 turbo announced

Mazda recently unveiled their updated Mazda6 with a 2.5 turbo engine (finally!!). This announcement takes me back a few years when I was in the market for a new car. Back then I was looking at BMW, but was also seriously considering Mazda because they are excellent in the steering/handling department and their tech offerings are top notch too. The only thing that held me back was the lack of a turbo engine (there was a lot of talk that the 6 would come with a turbo engine; never happened). I felt like the non-turbo 2.5 was not enough for me. Hence, I ended up in my first BMW. Now that I have had the taste of BMW, I am not sure if I would get a Mazda, but when I am back in the market again I know for sure that I will test drive the Mazda6 turbo with an open mind. Who knows what could happen...

my father had a mazda 626 that had 295,000 miles on it... It would've gone a lot longer if a drunk driver didnt smash into it and total it while it was parked on the street. They're reliable

I'd love to see this engine as an option across the line up, all the way down to the 3 and the CX-3.

I also have a soft spot for Mazda. I've had 3 ('88 RX-7 convertible, '90 MX-6 with 4 wheel steering! and a '95 MX-6) and found that they really try harder with innovations and also last for many many miles without any trouble at all. This new engine sounds great!

don't think it'll sell too well. the mazda 6 V6 didn't sell well back in 2002-08 and neither will this. TBH "enthusiasts" on this forum mainly value engine sound and hp/tq contrary to the light and nimble that mazda provides.

It's still FWD. My wife's car is a 2014 Mazda6 Grand Touring. Nice car, reliable and reasonably comfortable, but not enough power and if it had more, I'd worry about torque steer.

It'd be a beast in the 3! I think they would have to substantially redesign the 3 for it to be able to handle this kind of power.

right out of school I had 2004 Mazda6 6-spd v6 back in the day... car was a hoot to drive even tho it was FWD. I think that was a perfect size car... the new model I think is too big even tho I've not driven it lately

Interesting.... from what I can see, this isn't using their new gas compression based technology (I think they called it HCCI or Skyactiv-X). This is good for the tuners, as they don't have to try and deal with a brand new engine type/tech.

I am also very excited to see and drive their new gas HCCI/Skyactiv-X engines that combines compression with spark ignition. Pretty cool to see one of the smaller car manufactures innovate.

How do they get that much torque out of a 2.5L? But only 227 HP?

I own a 15 Mazda 3 sGT manual. Very happy with it. Dealership network is screwing Mazda - it sucks. Old, small, crappy dealership with antiquated service facilities.

Dealership I bought the car from was a bunch of lying thieves, too. Old school scumbag sales process.

I think that Mazda and their dealers are trying to update their facilities. A couple around me have recently remodeled. A lot of them are second rate though.

That's funny that you both mentioned their dealerships. When I bought my first Mazda, it was a beautiful new showroom and then they put Infinity there and kicked them out. They were displaced to the back half of their Dodge showroom. Then they sold off Mazda because of poor sales. I wonder why they were poor I feel Mazda tries hard but their showrooms keep them down. And they let them.

We used to have a member here whose family owns the local Hyundai dealership. They also had a Mazda dealership and recently got rid of that and brought in Nissan. I wish she was still around here to see her point of view on that switch. Maybe I'll ask her next time her commercial airs (I see her about 7x a night) but I doubt she'll answer

If the rumors are true and they will bring back AWD I'm all over that car. I had a Mazdaspeed6 and it was the best car I've ever driven. It had something special that none of my BMW could ever match. I just hope that this new turbo Mazda 6 is built stronger though because the Speed6 had too much power for about averything on the drivetrain.
