So, after calling my insurance company to chat about winter wheels, I was assured there would be no extra charge, just let them know when I put them on.
So I called today to tell them, and no surprises they want £35 for an 'aftermarket mod'. It makes me so mad that as a responsible driver who actually bothers with insurance, updates my insurance company with any changes and fits winter tyres to reduce the chances of an accident, they want to screw me for more money! Plus these are standard BMW wheels fitted by BMW and actually smaller that my summers!? I deserve a bloody discount. That's after they charged me £25 to change the car on the policy when I got my new one. As usual, it's the honest ones that pay the price. It's esure btw. /rant |

That is an absolute pile !!
I checked with my insurer (NFU Mutual) no issues / cost even if I change the wheels and as long as they meet the manufacturers recommendations / spec Some companies are probably recouping costs for lower premiums. CLICK HERE for the AIB Factsheet on winter tyres / wheels

TBH you can't expect low prices and not pay for changes. The reason they are cheap is becasue they cut out cost, the way they recoup this is by charging for euro cover, changes to the policy ...

Virtually all calls to insurance companies are recorded by them, just tell them to check the recording of your conversation when you were told that there's no extra charge.
Has fixed this kind of problem for me once before...

I'm with esure and when I informed them I put OEM wheels with winter tyres on they said there would be no change as technically it's not a modification. I'd call them back and complain

Thanks guys. I've lodged a complaint and someone will call me tomorrow apparently.
That guide might be useful but it does say I don't need to let them know about winter tyres unless I'm changing alloys, which I have. I'll see how I get on. Thanks for the advice |
