Insurance went up because F30
Hey guys,
My insurance premium just got renewed and it went up about $250, I called them and they told me that because they just got notified that the F30 is now cost to more repair if I get into an accident... Does this sound right? I don't have any accident or tickets. Can I fight it to have them bring down the premium to what it used to be? Thanks. Last edited by Prissy; 08-01-2016 at 10:51 AM.. |

Shop around with other companies? I do feel your pain, I was shocked by how much more expensive insuring my F30 was compared to my WRX that it replaced.

I've never heard of that happening. Honestly the only thing you can really do is try to escalate or switch.
I recommend getting quotes from other agencies all at a similar coverage level. I was with State Farm last year when I got my F30, I had a TTS before, I have a clean record but they wanted to increase my rate another $100/6 Months when I was already paying over $100 a month. I shopped around and Farmers seemed to be one of the best deals for me, I'm now paying half of what I used to and I actually have MORE coverage. You can always take the quote from someone else back to your agent and see what they say. I gave my Farmer's quote to my State Farm agent and he said there is no way he could get my rate remotely close even with all their discounts. Luckily the agent I switched to I had met through a friend but the quote was done independently of that, no special pricing, just know the guy isn't screwing me around. It's not unusual for insurance to go up a bit, but certainly not by more than 10%. The cost of repairs may have gone up in the last year, but the ACV of your car has gone down, which should offset it somewhat. Many companies will increase the premium and hope that you don't notice, then give you a phony excuse if you do. That to me says 'we don't want your business anymore'. My insurance company of ten years did that to me a year ago, so I gave them their wish and moved on. I saved 30% by making the change.

odd to hear that happening with the same car on the same policy. small changes sure or big ones when you change cars... that's odd. I'd start shopping around.
Who's your company? The craziest I've had was Progressive insured my $30K 07 accord for $1200/yr but then I got my 10 maxima and it went up to $3k! Switch to Geico and it went back down to $1200. Insurance companies are a scam!

I shop auto insurance at least once every two years. As noted many companies will routinely raise rates and most policyholders don't notice or don't care. I've found that a phone call to the company after you've found a better rate elsewhere often results in you being mysteriously 'reclassified' and thus qualifying for a better rate. Just be prepared for them to do the same thing next time around.

I say switch or at least shop around for quotes. I've been with my insurance for many years now and never have they raised the rates for the same car.

So Geico is still the cheapest that I can find right now. I just feel a bit f***ed over by Geico, that's all... And not sure if I can fight it with Geico because I am not good at negotating... |

I'm not sure which agencies operate in your area but when I did my insurance shopping last year I went to the website of every insurance company and requested a quote then put together a spreadsheet of the coverages and the prices they quoted me at. In order of cheapest to most expensive for auto and me in my scenario with $500 deductible: Nationwide, Progressive, Geico, Farmers, Esurance, Liberty Mutual, State Farm 6 Month Rate Range: $307.74 - $600.50 I did these with auto and renters combined, cheapest to most expensive: Nationwide, Progressive, Farmers, Geico, Esurance, State Farm, Liberty Mutual Annual Discounted Range: $752.89 - $1162.40 Note: Progressive limits certain coverage, so all of these were done with similar coverage and uninsured/underinsured coverage but Progressive offers a max coverage lower than all the others recommend. |

Allstate wanted to charge me $276/month for F36. I got a quote from Geico and it was $105/month with better coverage(no deductible on PIP coverage). Definitely shop around with a few companies! They are betting your not going to have the time to shop around and just say ok with the increase.

I have State Farm and they are always increasing the rate. I just got my f30 renewed and it went up $75/6months. I was paying $490, now $565. The reason when I called was, we just had some rate increased for everyone.
Just waiting to get to $600 to start making some noise to them.

1) Raise your collision deductible. A small deductible costs a lot. I use $500, but you can go to $1000. 2) Raise your comprehensive deductible. 3) I do not advise dropping uninsured motorist coverage. 4) Separate your glass coverage from comprehensive 5) Usually, AAA towing is cheaper than towing included. 6) You might drop PIP (personal injury protection) if you have good medical insurance. 7) there is more, but you get the idea. Geico is often one of the least expensive, but Progressive is often cheaper. But IMO, you get what you pay for - claims take longer and you have to fight for OEM parts and good shops under the cheaper companies. |

That sucks man and I feel your pain as well. Nationwide offered me $820 a month to add my 340i. This is freaking insane!! Insurance is more than my monthly Loan lol. Main reason for this was my Age (22) and $60K Vehicle. F**k that!! I switched Insurance Companies and got a much reasonable price for 2 Vehicles and House into same plan. Do your research i'm sure you will find something much better.

I joined AAA just for POM. But when my Ins Co -Liberty Mutual, a good company - raised my rates for my 14 year old VW Passat, it was time to shop. All I did was call AAA and spoke to an agent. He priced out a bunch of stuff, I ended up transferring all my coverage because of the savings.
Th funny thing is I get stuff from LM now about switching back. They don't love you til you leave them. |

insurance cost depends on two main things
1. your own driving record 2. the cost/accident data on the car you drive, this changes frequently depending on all the people that drive this particular car. if a particular car is driven by younger people , thus more accidents , thus premiums will increase. example: the cheapest car that I have in the house hold is evo 10. All the cars are under my name and every one in family is listed as driver on all cars. Evo is the most expensive to insure 1600 a year vs m3 of 1100 a year. ask your agent if you can combine home and auto and that will give you a discount or sometimes joining a farm bureau will give you discount |

I will say that Geico has paid out over 45k in claims to me for totaling two cars ( one at fault)
And my rates haven't risen above 1800 a year for my 328 f30. I have also been with them 25 years so maybe that helped |
