Does Anyone Understand the N20 Engine
What I'm wondering is how it is that BMW can sell the N20, detuned on the 320i, for less than it sells the same motor, not detuned, on the 328i. I would have thought that it would cost more to detune a motor than it would to just leave it be.
Does someone know whether it's really the 328's version of the N20 that's been tuned rather than the 320's having been detuned?

All about price point, taxes and marketing, IMO.
This sort of thing is wide spread, always has been as far as I can remember. I used to joke about Ford and their engine capacities, when they supplied say a 1100cc & 1300cc version of exactly the same car. All other specification identical, and how we paid more for 'bigger holes' in the engine. OK there are subtle differences, but not going to change production costs to reflect the higher selling price the way it did. We have examples of cars in the UK, which are exact same engines running a different state of tune, all built around a pricing structure based on engine output. HighlandPete |

Same name, but 2 slightly different engines. 328i weight a bit more, a part of that is cause of a "tuned" engine. I can imagine they used slightly different valves and turbos. Higher pressure, different compression ratio etc. You can also say the 320i got the base engine and the 328i got the upgraded/tuned version.

BMW probably has 100 different engines all drawn up in plans and engineering they can produce at their own whim.
They have the parts suppliers and the means to produce such items with little to no difference in physical cost between the 328i and 320i more than likely. Plus, a lot of it is probably due to software tuning.
