Stealership called and said the pump is toast. At least is not trying to sell me the whole tank but wants 1800$ to change the pump. 900$ for the pump only

I might try to do it myself. Do I need to drain the tank ? If so I do I do that ?
I guess will drain after the pump is removed.

Any coding / programming needed or just plug and play ?

Are you under 8yr/80K? The Federal Emissions warranty covers the SCR system.

86.000. Dealer says not covering it.

A sprayer with hot water melted all that solid def pretty fast.

I think the leak is somwhere near the injection point ans some of the def run all the way back inside the corrugated black hose of the metering line and came out near the pump. Made it look like the pump was leaking

I'm impressed that you are diagnosing it better than the dealer is. It shouldn't be surprising, but still.

There is a chance that the pump had to work extra hard since it was constantly leaking, and therefore it died, but I'd make that call only after you sealed it all.

The faults where on pressure build up too low. I hope is fixed I have to drive to Arizona tomorrow.

CianoAmerico looks like we had the same leak and interaction with the dealer lol. See my post above, #15.

Everything has been fine on my car for the last 2 months. I'm pretty confident you had the same issue as I did and will be able to avoid replacing the major parts. Fingers crossed!

6 hrs and 450 miles later and no problem.
I will return the Metering Valve to FCP Euro.

Dealers run a fraudulent buisness. Unbeliavable. 1800$ they asked.

What line or pipe did you end up finding that caused the leak?

It seems it was one of the pipes near the sprayer. Curious which pipe/tube it was as well.
Glad we're not changing tanks for no reason

My CEL just came on a few days ago. ISTA+ gave the same code as Alexandre0 mentioned: "80518A Metering line heating, activation: Line disconnection"

ISTA+ suggested to measure the resistance across the heating element. I checked and got a reading of ~1kohm, so I'm assuming this line needs to be replaced.

I called dealership about the replacement metering line (PN 16197421420). They said the line was not compatible with my VIN and that the PN was a european number. They can't even find the equivalent part in their system. We went back and forth several times sharing diagrams by email. They just have the coolant lines from the engine. To top it off, I can't read the PN on the line under my car... the tag is worn off. Any suggestions?

Awesome. I was in the 3600$ ballpark, what a racket.

After seeing your own experience it looks like I didn't need to replace the sprayer unit, oh well!

Grab the 16197260228 part, it's the same. My car is also Canadian, and that part was the correct replacement.

I think the number you have is for the European 320d or 325d - our cars are sort of a Frankenstein combination of these 2 models for the NA market.

I had the same issue last summer and used 16197260228. Was an easy swap once I got the covers off.

Unfortunately I now have a dreaded countdown because the level sensor seems to be f'ed inside the active tank... Just filled it up to the max and reset everything and now just need to go for the hour drive and hope it is just the cold weather.

There is a transfer pump with tubing between the passive tank (that you just filled) going to the active tank. The pump and tube is outside of the tanks, so the DEF could be getting transferred over now or when it thaws out.

I took it out on a drive today (45 mins) on the highway and warning still on...

On ISTA+ is there a way to cycle on the pump?

I ended up taking out the wheel liner and disconnecting some of the tubing/lines and the active tank is full to the brim with DEF. ISTA shows that it is completely empty.

Looks like the level sensor has crapped out. Before replacing the tank, any suggestions on how to maybe reset it? It was very cold here in the last weeks (-30) and I'm wondering if the active tank froze and messed up the sensor calibration.

I assume you tried parking it heated indoors for a couple days ? I'm in Montreal too and I've put my old E46 in a downtown underground garage a couple days to thaw ice in wheel wells and frozen windows before lol.

From memory I think ISTA+ has a TIS search functionality where you can put in keywords and it'll surface all the possible options/procedures. Might be worth trying SCR or DEF and going through the results. This thread has a link to a TIS article in the SCR category but unclear if it's for replacing the tank or just the sensor since newtis.info is shut down.

I'd be curious if you find anything as I'm sure I'll run into this in a couple years!

My car actually gets to live in a garage, but it's only passively heated... But I've even tried driving for over an hour without success. The other sensors work, I get the temperature (and the heater is working based on those). There was in ISTA+ the option to reset the level sensor learning, but not much more in terms of troubleshooting. But I checked the wiring and the connector as well.

I've ordered a replacement tank that should arrive today.

On that note and knowing that the TIS resources are no longer on that site, does anyone have the procedure for the tank replacement? There are two cross braces that look to be in the way of getting it out...
