Whatever. It is not BS it happens to be my personal experience with the system. I am looking forward to having it coded as off. Something I didn't know I could have done. Obviously there are other people that have had the same experience as I have. BMW even offer to code it so it is defaulted as off rather than on.

RAM hopefully they will get it sorted for you.

I let ASS do its thing and like it switching off at the lights, railway crossing, or whenever it can.

I agree about the possible delay, which is minimal, but I have never encountered anyone setting off faster than me (from behind) from standstill because I am waiting for the engine to start.

Of course there is an easy fix if you want ASS active. If you're first in line, chances are you will see the lights changing, so you can be ready to go. in the AT, ease the foot off the brake or move the selector to DS to start the engine a couple of seconds before your lights turn green. Then you don't have any delay. I do this often. Works for me. Otherwise, if you are in the line of traffic, you can anticipate movement and start the engine a little early. Not hard for an experienced driver.

Similarly, the 6MT would have its own way of switching the engine on prior to taking off again.

Thanks for the helpful advice David I will see how it goes in the 328 and try your way of driving. However, I will still have it coded to be off by default rather than on.

Ram no problem keep us updated with the progress.

It's a horrible feature that has caught me off guard a couple times when the time between switching the car on and clicking on the ASS off button wasnt long enough and I have been trying to make a quick right hand turn into a street.

I asked bmw how much to code it off and apparently it will take something like 3 hours at over $200 per hour for the labour. I told him that sounds incredibly reasonable

I think 360Spida has managed to code it himself to default off Sherweeeny. We are going to see if we will take bribes to do some coding for us

I too have coded the ASS off!

Even though its not that hard to push the button every time you start the it certainly is better to not have to do it.

If anyone happens to be coming up to Newcastle and would like it done let me know. Happy to help if I can.

BMW should have the switch the other way round. If you want to use ASS you turn it on rather than having to turn it off every time.

I have also heard simply moving the steering wheel will wake up the engine too, not sure if this has been confirmed though.

Yes, moving the steering wheel will restart the engine.

Pushing the gear stick to the left (into Sport) or putting the car into Sport+ driving mode will disable ASS.

Hi all got my car back finally! BMW did a software update n test drive it n said should be ok now. They did not do the coding and if I want it to be default to OFF I will have to pay $300. From now on I will just have to remember push that annoying button when I get in the car.

If you come to an intersection for example, you can turn the steering wheel a certain amount to prevent ASS from stopping the engine. I have used that feature previously and it works.

So once you approach the position and stop the car, twist the wheel say at least 90 degrees and the engine will stay on. Remember, ASS does wait around 2 seconds before doing its thing, so you have a little time. May need to experiment a little with the minimum turning requirement.

What a crock, if you we're to just code the ASS it would take no more than 5 - 10 minutes!

Ask the dealer for detailed quotation and if you are brave enough to pay that much money, you would like to be in person while the service is performed in the BMW workshop.

When people are under pressure, they can't cheat!

Sample quote:
1. drive to work with morning hour traffic: 45 min for 2 blocks
2. start a computer take 15 minutes coz i'm using Windows 95, oh no, the computer says no, restart for another 15 minutes
3. Now it hits the compulsory morning tea break, read the paper, cigarette, coffee: 15 minutes
4. now let's do the job today, what's on the list: ah coding ASS
5. mate, where is the cable to connect to the car? 10 minutes
6. Put the car in position: coding 5 minutes
7. test the car in race track 60km away return 1 hr
8. finish service report 15 min.

Done 3 hrs work!

Well, there you have it people. 3hrs work @ what was it? $200.00 per hour = a very reasonable (cheap even) $600.00.

Was that with or without GST?
Just in case, let's add GST for a grand total of…..wait
I forgot the standard 'consumables' charge. Say 5%, $30.00. Sounds fair. No one will question that, will they.

So $600 + $30 = $630 + $63 GST = $693.00 - PERFECT!

If I don't want the car to shut off at a particular stop, for whatever reason, I just turn the steering wheel very slightly from left to right and back again. It won't shut off if you're moving the wheel...it's only a minute adjustment that I've become accustomed to. Works for me. Otherwise I appreciate the car being off during long delays.
