F30 335i vs Lexus IS350

Performance wise, which is better? I ordered a 335i btw, in production now should receive in november or beg dec. I don't see a lot of them compared online. Lexus is 3.5L RWD 306hp.

Do you want be with a hot babe that is incredibly fit and toned, with a long slender figure, a brilliant mind, complete with a monthly cycle where she goes inexplicably insane, only to mysteriously come back to her senses a few days later;

or;

Would you rather be with a mindless Real Doll(TM) that can't do anything more than give you artificial self gratification in complete silence---just like the Lexus?

On paper, it looks like the Lexus is a bit slower 0 - 60 and is down on torque (270 vs the BMW's 300 lb-feet). Other than that, I've not driven the 350 variant, but drove the 250 during BMW's Olympic test drive event, and they both have the same transmission/suspension. These two items are the Lexus's biggest letdown, IMO. Not only is a manual transmission unavailable, but the automatic and engine do NOT work well together. The auto is slow to react when using the paddles, slow to react to 1/2-way to Wide-Open Throttle applications, and even slower to actually change gears when it grants a shift. Comparatively, the BMW's ZF transmission shifts pretty darn close to where I would when it's in Sport setting and gear changes are INSTANTANEOUS.

The suspension also didn't meet my butt-meter's expectations. Given Lexus's reputation as a purveyor of ultra-plush luxury cruisers, I was very surprised at harsh bump impact and a suspension I found unsorted and underwhelming. It seemed neither capable of coddling and isolating nor providing the Bimmer's buttoned-down predictability and balance.

Pat yourself on the back for buying the better car.

Ok. I never drove the is250. But I have drove the is350. Have to say it was quick. I just didn't know how it compared to the 335i since there was none to test drive. Don't know how the stock suspension on the is350 felt because my friend had Tein lower springs on it. So it was a bit stiff in the back seat, but in the front. Initially wanted an is350 f-sport but then I disliked the room in the back seat of it. The f30 was much roomier in the back. Glad I made the right choice.

Wanted to see the performance wise comparison cause my friend wants to take his is350 against my 335i after I break it in. His is all stock except for lower springs from tein. Lets see how that goes. Lol.

i drove a 2006 IS350 when they first came out. now at the time i had a 2005 acura TSX.

lets jsut say the IS350 is really fast , but it feels so numb it doesnt matter. it has like 0 pedal feel and its just so isolated. like a RWD really fast camry.

allegedly they have tried to improve this, but yeah its very floaty and disconnected. the 335i should probably easily beat (i would think even a 328i would be pretty close performance wise) it as its got an underrated engine that and the IS is not a particularly light car.

IS350 is also due for a new design next year, so probably something to consider.

Yes it is really fast, but really heavy. But the shift do seem to lag a bit for me. Can't wait to see how quick the 335i sport auto is.

Btw how is the tsx? The new ones are kinda nice to me.

According to Motor Trend, the 2013 BMW 335i does the 1/4 miles in 13.7 at 104 MPH and the 2006 Lexus IS350 does the 1/4 miles in 14 at 99.8 MPH.

1/4mile alone doesn't define such a car like a 335i or Lexus 350 imo.

Au contraire, I didn't know any 1/4 mile times at all when I ordered any BMW in the past years.

Cheers

We have a Lexus IS250, my wife drives it. It's not a bad car and it is a lot cheaper than the equivalent BMW but it is just not as good all round. I don't really feel like explaining every reason why but I will give a short list.

Things that make the 3 series better than an IS:

-fold down seats
-IS suspension is too stiff, makes a tinny, resonating sound in the cabin at speed when you're on a road with lots of cracks/expansion joints
- IS seats kill my lower back on rides over an hour, the butt part is too narrow (and I'm not a fat guy)
- Nav screen is annoying (touch screen sucks) and resolution is brutal/iphone integration sucks
- sometimes the tranny doesnt know which gear it wants to be ....but the bimmer probably does this at times as well.

Steering feel and brakes in the IS are good.

I test drove both only briefly. The butt-dyno suggests they have very similar accelation - but the transmissions work way, way, WAY differently. The slushbox in the IS350 is pathetically slow. The ZF 8spd in the 335i is nicely responsive. For driving enjoyment, the 335i wins hands down. For bragging rights, not sure which would win, stock vs stock. For more bragging rights, the 335i's tune-ability is a clear advantage.

At first I thought you were talking/referencing to the "stereotypical" drivers of each car:

the first being the IS350 driver
and
the second being the BMW 335i driver ...

but then it hits me, Real Dolls can't drive BMWs

Other things being equal, I think a 335i will definitely beat an IS350 in any kind of straight-line test. Primarily due to the better transmission as other people said. Although I would guess BMW's engine probably makes more power in the real world too, even if they're about the same on paper. Not to mention I'm sure the BMW is better in lots of other ways.

O ic. My friend has experience that tiny sound in his car. I noticed it also when driving. If you rest your left foot on the rest pedal you can feel like a tiny consistent tapping down there.

My wife just moved from a 2008 IS 250 6MT to a 2013 335i M Sport 6MT. She keeps asking me why I didn't have her make the switch to a BMW sooner. I just shoulder shrug.

She has been bitten by the mod bug and now wants the Hartge tune for the car!
