What do I do with my stock run flat summers????
Just picked up a 328i x drive sport line and had a few questions for the experts out there...
This is my situation: 1) 19 inch rims w/ summer tires (run flats) 2) Purchased tire and rim protection which dealer said will cover me all year round for 5 years as long as I have rims / tires purchased from BMW (summer or winter tires I end up purchasing) 3) I live in Toronto.... My questions are: 1) I get I will need to switch out the summers as we get close to winter....BUT what is the best thing for me to do given my situation? Given the car is AWD would if suffice for me to buy a set of all seasons from BMW (so as to make sure I am covered under the wheel and tire protection), and never again worry about switching between summer / winter tires? I drove around in a FWD with all seasons this past winter and it seemed ok....is it even possible to buy and switch out the all seasons from BMW? 2) Do I just go ahead and buy a winter tire / rim set from BMW at a ridiculous price and constantly switch between the two? Is the grip of snow tires that much better relative to all seasons to warrant? (remember..i was fine with all seasons on a FWD...) 3) Do I buy a winter tire / rim package myself from tire rack, etc. but then only be covered under the rim / tire protection package for the summer months? Any advice / suggestions would be much appreciated.... |

Here in Quebec, winter tires are mandatory.
But even before they were, I had a winter and a summer complete set for all my cars. For me a all season is a bad compromise in every situation, but still an available option. I would try 2, and if not possible at a good price, I would do 3.

The Service Contract is always restricted to the original vehicle and the tires and rims which are installed, and any subsequent set of tires and rims that are of manufacturer specification. The service contract can be transferred to a new private owner of the vehicle. Proof of purchase may be requested. From what i understand you can purchase winters from anywhere as long as it follows the specification of BMW Last edited by Shakes; 07-29-2014 at 11:43 AM.. |

I'm somewhat in the same situation and here is what my understanding is.
Firstly, i have a rear wheel drive setup. I bought the wheel and tire package which covers the current set of rims and summer tires that came with the car. Dealer said i can buy any summer tire from anywhere(any bmw dealer, tire rack or other tire store) and the coverage is still valid for the 5 years. For winters, i would need to buy a winter rim and tire set from the same bmw dealer to be covered under the wheel and tire package. the dealer quoted me $4200 for a winter rim/tire set. that is an absurd amount to pay. I can buy a set of aftermarket rims for $1500 or under (as i'm not concerned with my winter setup) and 4 tires for approx $1000 totalling $2500. Paying up for the bmw winter set is not worth it just to be covered under the wheel/tire package. also, i'm in toronto and have 19inch rims, and have hit at least 9 potholes HARD that left me feeling like my car is broken, and there has been ZERO after effects so far. no rattles, alignment still good etc. I'm left feeling that the wheel and tire package i purchased was a complete waste of money. however, i have piece of mind that i'm covered on my 19's. For the aftermarket winters, i plan to get 18's so there will be less chance of denting the rim etc. do your self a favor and save the money you'd spend on the BMW winter setup which could be better spent on new tires if you get a puncture... Thats my two cents... |

Dealer just sold me the Rim and Tire protection package which covers any wheel and tire on the car... The warranty follows the VIN of the vehicle, not the style of rims and tires you have... they have to have more than 25% tread left though to claim warranty.... It's good for aftermarket wheels is how they sold me on it! $700 later! they better not be lying!

As for the OPs question, get a dedicated set of winter tires/wheels! You will not regret it, stopping on winters does not compare with all-seasons at all. And if the set saves you from one minor fender bender, they've already paid for themselves plus more in saved insurance premiums. Plus you'll find with two sets, you'll buy tires less because they wear out at half the rate. In the long run it's more than worth it! I'm biased though because I've had winter tires save my hide on more than one occasion...... |

It says in your wheel and tire contract you signed when you first bought the car and warranty!!! Doesn't anyone read their paperwork and fine print before they sign? LOL

even with the ontract the wrods are very miss leading even on the website stating what the warranty covers. for example : "scruff on rims from pot holes etc.." on rim is suppoosed to be covered but bmw will only replace rims if its damaged and can not be on car anymore.
