Winter tyres, Run Flat or not ?

Winter tyre season is rapidly approaching, only 2 Degrees C on the way to work this morning.

I have a set of BMW winter wheels with Pirelli Sottozero on that I used last Winter and I think quite frankly they are awful compared to Continental TS850 I have used in the past on other cars.

My question is do most of you stick with Runflats as Winters or go non- run flat as many do with their summer tyres?

Recent purchased a set of 18” Ferric Grey 388 wheels with Conti T830P runflats for my M140. While I have MPSS on my existing wheels (with an inflator kit), the thought of fecking about with that on a cold, dark winter’s night just doesn’t appeal to me!! Runflats give you a greater chance of getting home (or to a safer location), then dealing with the problem.

I have MPSS summers, but still went with runflats for winters. For me it was the experience of an offside blowout on the M40 heading in to London on a dark wet Sunday evening decades ago.

Having got to the hard shoulder, no way was I going to change an offside wheel in the dark with trucks and cars rushing past. I got the recovery person to do it, but didn't enjoy the 45 minute wait.

On both of our cars we have summer non-runflats and winter runflats.

I've just changed my Pirelli Sottozeros RFTs for Goodyear Ultragrip 8s (non-RFT).

I decided to go non-RFT and have bought tyre weld and a repair kit as a precaution. The difference in weight between the used Pirelli RFT winters and the brand new Goodyear winters was significant!

If you have a blowout on a runflat you'll be in exactly the same position!

I think not having a set of winter wheels was a mistake. My wheels now have really taken a pounding with tyre swaps.
I'd recommend a set of winter wheels.
