Returning to the f3x fold
Got a dilemma, need advice.
Used to have 330xdrive touring, now have x3 3.5d. Don't like it. Want to return from up high... So gonna return to fully loaded f3x . Petrol or Diesel ? I could have 340i or 335xd. I'm used to x drive. Never had rwd - always fwd, Quattro and last 3 yrs xdrive. What's 340i like in the winter and the wet ? Would I be having trouser filling moments on damp roundabouts ? Really torn between 335xd and 340i. I'm not a fast driver, never push a car to its limits, and love the secured footing of 4wd... but diesel appears to be the new devil , and love the sound of the 340i.... Thanks for guidance .. (S4 is a natural choice , but high in the theft radars...) |

If you like the sound of a petrol and don't do great mileage...get a 340i!

Don't be put off by RWD.
It rewards smooth progressive power delivery. It you want to just smash the power down in any circumstance and let the electronics sort out 'your' issues then go AWD. If you want a smooth 6 cylinder power delivery that sounds great, has reasonable economy when driven with restraint and does not come with the soft wallowing SE suspension then there's only one choice. The middle number is a 4. |

I've always had rwd for the last 20 years. I live high on the Pennine moors where it snows and freezes regularly. My (ahem) second home is in the Scottish highlands. Modern cars are pussycats and I've had no problems. But I do highly recommend winter tyres for peace of mind.

Go for a the 340i
Unless you treat winter with total disrespect and drive like a loon there is nothing to worry about. M4 is the snow is fine too if driven with a little care. Get that 340i individual order in

I went 330d for xdrive and I do 15-18k p/a. Currently having a wobble with the diesel stigma / future implications (euro 6 I think is ok for now).
I had a m135 a couple of years ago and it wasn't great when using the power in anything bar ideal conditions traction / confidence. The petrol still produce a big lump of torque. Maybe the longer wheelbase of the f3x might improve things...ive not tried one. I think the consensus is that the 40i is 8-10mpg worse on average? Depends if that's a big deal to you or not Personally I wanted xdrive for that all year round assurance and usability of the power in most conditions. An x40i if/when it comes would take an even bigger hit in mpg i guess. |
