2012 328i Owner with tuning questions!

Hi everyone!

Happy new years to everyone, and I hope that we're all off to a good start to the year. I'd like to fully introduce myself into the F30 Forum.

My first and only car that I've currently owned: 2012 328i Fully loaded w/ Sports package.

Here are my current mods that I've done to my car, and keep in mind, I've done nothing for cosmetics as of right now since I was obsessed with getting my car more efficient, and ultimately faster.

- Armytrix Exhaust (Full-set valvetronic exhaust suite)
- Armytix Decatted downpipe
- Evolution Raceworks OEM Style chargepipe
- Injen Short Ram intake w/ MR Tech & Air Box w/Scoop

Mod's that I'm currently planning to do this year is getting an intercooler, and probably in the next few weeks a tune to get some of the stupid CEL codes that I'm getting.

For anyone that's wondering if my car has blown up yet, It's currently at 83,000 Kms, with no real issues except drinking fuel.

Now question for you guys. Recently, when I got the armytrix installed, there have been CEL codes that are quite weird, even the guys at the shop said that they are unusual, but for the catalytic converter error, that's an obvious one. Heres a photo:

We all came to the conclusion that I should get a tune to finally maximize all of my mods, and I agree. Wanted to get everyone's input on what tune I should get, as they told to get their sponsored tuner, which costs upwards of $800 USD, which is a bit steep.

td;lr : What tune should I get?

Thanks everyone!
I'll post an exhaust clip on here soon enough, if not you can head over to my instagram to hear my armytrix or my AWE!

+1, seriously, "almost fully internally modded"? I expected a complete rebuild with aftermarket pistons and bigger turbo at least.

You haven't even got a tune?

$800 is right in the middle of tune pricing. Also depends whether that's a piggy-back or an ECU Flash.

if paying someone $800 to literally drill into ur own ECU and then load a file that 80% of time came from someone else for a fraction of a cost and if ur lucky the handful of company out there that actually can honestly say they safely extract power over the multi billion dollar r&d bmw did is a...thing for u.

it's 2017, u literally can get it on Amazon prime same day.

Stack them.

Def change the title! Internally modded means build engine with forged internals. You are best off with Full Bolt Ons in the title which many already are. As for a flash tune. Best in the business for the N20 is Recardo from ACF Performance with 2nd best being GSR Tunning. You have a lot of studying to do with power limitations and safe tunning options for the car. Good luck on your adventure.

JB4 and intercooler should be next

Getting a CEL with catted downpipe and no tune is not that unusual

I was told that JB4 might not be a good choice since it's a piggy back and such, would it still be safe ?

I know yours is. but u also know others didn't get theirs dyno. one of the most respected shop around here with 3 letters told me "yeah you know we just drill them right"

I really don't care but it kinda bothers me the amount of people do it to their lease, they usually go to this place in the valley. G I forgot the name

I don't know about u I'm just saying it's not a cake walk like Audis obd once and ur done. so I like to just cut the middle man out. way more simpler. it's hardly rocket science. comes with step by step manual...

I'd never allow the DME to be drilled..lease or not. I get that it's easier..but no thanks. A sticker put over the hole is not water/weather/heat proof lol.

Everyone has their opinions on Piggy backs vs Flash tunes. Not trying to be biest or tell you to go one way or another but looking over our 4 bangers and 6 cylinders the company I mentioned first is what I believe the best at this time as they have fixed many other tuners issues and also have tuned a big turbo 4 cylinder that still runs today. General consent with tuning is that Flash ECU tune is safer option than any piggy back for the car.

Piggy backs are great way to get power fast, but I feel that a flash tune is the safest way to go as it handles all parameters of the car as it came from factory and gives you the same power or more than a Piggy back with less PSI on the turbo....(hint hint). Piggy backs intercept the signals and alter them than send them back (chance for a delay in power but with the new boards this has not occurred and Terry is a God with tuning BMW's) If planning to go for over 350WHP, you will need Internal as in pistons and rods etc. Also you will need stack fueling and a way to manage that if you want to go more, which than you will need a JB4 to stack on top of a proper flash tune and both are required to run your motor safely.

Both Piggy and ECU are good tuning options just depends on what you are looking for and best is to search the forums both N55 and 4 bangers and see who has bad rep and who has a good rep and call each up and see what they can offer for you and your goals/needs.

Hope this helps you.
