Not defrosting your windscreen could land you points and a fine

Didnt know this.......

IT WAS recently revealed that drivers can land a £60 fine and three penalty points while defrosting their windscreen, if they fail to clear all the ice, or £20 for leaving their engine to idle. Here are number of ways to defrost the screen and avoid the fine.

New one on me.

I defrost my car with the engine running (and go inside while it defrosts).

Hmm, I think I'll pass on the option of pouring salty water on my car.

Hardly news...

Highway code rule 123

You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.
Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution. However it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults.

Highway code rule 229
Before you set off

you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted.

So it's quite OK to have the engine running on your driveway to clear the screen (the "fault")

So I'm ok to leave it running on my own drive? I just lock it, a nice couple of beeps to wake the neighbours as it locks, and then come back out to a warm defrosted car 5 minutes or so later.

I'm suppos it could be driven off if someone smashed the window and climbed in.

My wife's Audi doesn't allow you to lock the car with the engine running, so can't do the same there. Probably for the best.

Hold the key fob to the drivers window and press lock, no beeps. (Read it on here last week).

I will genuinely never understand those who oppose the luke warm water treatment. Means defrosting is a 20 second job.

I found out this week that the two little beeps are the least of my neighbour's problems when I cold start the M3 and leave it running

I have one sort of repaired stone chip on the driver's side and one large unrepairable one on the passenger side, out of my view. Neither have started to crack yet. Under no circumstances am I throwing warm water onto my frozen windscreen.

I cleared most of the snow on Saturday to take daughter to work as she's never driven on snow & only been driving 1 year, passed many cars struggling to move especially on slight inclines, on the way back home I braked approaching a corner & guess what happened next......all the snow from the roof slid forward & covered the whole screen, I immediately stopped, turned on the wipers only to find out they stopped after about 6" resulting in a wiper malfunction on the Idrive screen. I got out to clear the screen at this point I felt like a complete twat, you never think something like this will happen to you. Any ways after clearing the screen wipers worked fine & malfunction disappeared.

Lesson learnt: clear ALL snow/frost before driving off.

Have I mentioned before that with the 330e I can set the car to defrost and warm itself up for whatever time I want, or use the app to do it any time I feel like when it's plugged it???

None of all that bother of de-icer, to water or not to water, leaving it running etc etc.

Of course it doesn’t.
What would you expect it to say after every mandatory rule - Do not exceed the speed limit, then add several possible pages of sentencing.

Traffic fines and sentences vary. E.g. bus lanes are enforced by councils, 38 in a 30 will be treated different to 100mph in a 30. Do you want all penalties spelt out so you can decide if it’s worth adhering to a rule?

Sorry, forgot to to add the !!!!!!!!!!, at the disbelief in the post

Look, I think you are missing the point. The point of this thread is to highlight that its possible to get points and a fine if your windscreen is not completely clear, and also a fine if you leave your engine running - this is certainly news to me. So thought I'd share it.

I think most people are aware what you should and shouldn't do as pointed out in your post 5. However, how many know they can get points and fine for the above?

Try pouring boiling hot battery acid instead. Might be safer than some nasty luke warm water
