Highway driving tire noise

As soon as the temperatures dropped below 30', the car reported that I check the tires. Sure enough, it was 10PSI lower than what it should have been. The guy at the local tire shop inflated it once again but I didn't check to see if it was exactly what the side door sticker said or not. When I checked with the TPMS, it reported that tires were fine.

However, now when I drive on the highway, after 55mph, I notice a Mmm.. Mmmm. mmmmm... sound and vibration on the foot pedal and when I get to 65mph, it increases in sound and vibration.

Could this be because of incorrect PSI? What is the recommended PSI for the winter? I really hope nothing is wrong with the car. It only has 12K miles and I got it less than 3 months ago.

Underinflating will wear the tires in an odd way which can cause that. If you get them rebalanced then it should be fine again.

Your user manual will have the recommended air pressure for all the styles of tires/wheels that BMW offers (winters, summers, different profiles, etc).

Look at tpms screen. It will show tire pressures and you can easily see if pressure is off.

Costco has a great air setup at their tire place.

Not sure when it changed, but my 2014 does not show tire pressures, just color codes the tires on the screen for low (yellow) or good (green). I think it can be changed by coding.

Same here, my 2014 does not display TP, just color.

so this morning was 23 degrees and took her for a drive in the highway, same thing. I thought since weather is really cold, it would change if my TP was too high but nope, same thing.

At this point, I am concluding the possibility of alignment issue or tire out of balance issue (more likely).

What do you guys think based on my original description?

Steering vibration is usually wheel balance.

Get a tire pressure gauge from amazon for $10, portable inflator for $20. Do it yourself. I'll never trust those tire shop guys on this. Look at your door jam for factory recommended PSI.

If vibration still there after correct PSI go for wheel balance. Usually $20 per wheel. Make sure they use Hunter Road Force to balance.

Yea, I ordered a digital gauge from Amazon already and it will be here tomorrow. Any recommendation for a tire inflator?

The steering wheel doesn't vibrate, it is coming from floor and pedals.

So I guess it's not wheel balance then.

Pedal vibration is also likely one of your wheel is not balanced.

Thanks, I will wait until I get TP gauge from Amazon tomorrow then I'll head to the shop and figure this out. Now I just have to find out where they have that Hunter Road Force Balancer.

I see you're in NY, I am in Queens so if you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

I don't usually go to local shops (DIY on simple stuff), but I've been recommended to InTrack Tires on Jamaica Ave.

Or you can use tirerack's system and find a top rated one. They have all the info listed with price/road force, etc.

I just got back from this tire shop. My tires were out of balance.

However, I got on the highway for a test drive and STILL, the humming noise was there. While In the car, I requested for service. I have a feeling it is the wheel bearings. Scratching my head though... only 12500 miles..

Maybe take it to the dealer if it's something covered by the warranty?

That sucks. Mine shows the tire pressure and the temperature. Mind you coding was required to get temperature

Some general pointers:

- You lose about 1psi per 10F drop in temp. So always plan on a cold season check/inflate of your tires.
- Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure on the door sticker while cold.
- Never trust tire shops to inflate your tires correctly. Always double-check.
- For those of use with older TPMS that don't show exact value, it's green within a 5psi range so don't trust the TPMS either - always verify with your own gauge.
- Keep a portable inflator in the trunk for emergencies.
- Yes you have RFT but they are ruined while driving flat so save yourself a $200 tire and pull over and inflate if your light goes off while on the road.

Depends on the location, etc. Mine (in Canada) only gets the rotational tire monitoring like my E90 had (so just red/green tires on the iDrive). US cars seem to get TPMS which gives you pressure and temp. I don't know what decides which car gets what though.

If you have TPMS, the valve stems are rigid. If they are rubber, it's just the rotational monitoring.

Tell that to Roger Goodell.

I check my pressure on average once a month. I have my own compressor, so I'm able to check the pressure with the tires truly cold. If you have to drive to get to a compressor the tires will have warmed by the time you get there, so add another pound or two.

Tire noise will be louder in cold temperatures, because the tires are stiffer. You might even notice a difference in the noise level if you drive far enough for the tires to warm enough to soften them.

My 2007, 2011, and 2014 three and four series did not show the actual tire pressure in numbers. Just got my 2017 440xi a few days ago. I am very happy to see it does show the tire pressure in PSI. (number value).
It sure took BMW long enough to add this feature. Almost every other half way decent car on the road has had this for years.

How are your tire treads? I noticed once driving in very low tread the tires would vibrate and make a high pitched noise at very specific highway speeds like 65-66 mph.
