Vithy

My car has already Xenon light.
But maybe I am thinking of retrofit the 6WA cluster, if I get a cheap one.

But I am not sure if my car has already the right FEM Module for this.

I think you will be fine. FEM Mid should accommodate 6WA. A friend of mine and a forum member is going to be installing one and I will be flashing it today or tomorrow. He's got FEM MID.

He got a used 6WA, so it's showing VIN mismatch warning. But when we installed it in his car with the MOST cable to NBT, it worked fine. Showed all the info and functioned correctly.

Short answer, you will be fine if you want to retrofit.

What is the part number for connecting cable 6WA to NBT?

How will you change VIN of 6WA? Is it enough to flash cluster with original VIN?

Yes it is necessary. Which is why he got an Eeprom programmer to flash it with virgin file and then we have to flash with his VIN.

But it will still work with the Red tamper dot on the cluster and as long as the millage is lower than the car's. If not FEM will inherit the millage from cluster, which might not be good.

I think it looks right. Apparently the connector is a little different/smaller on the BMW one. My friend who got it here in Toronto had to order it directly from the dealer and it wasn't expensive. They come in a pack of 10 for under $20. I will let you know the part number. The optical cable should be good.

I would get this from this seller. My guess is it looks right and should work.

Not for the whole cable. I don't think they sell the whole cable, not sure about it, Cable and Connectors come separately.

Cable goes for $50 and connectors come in bulk.

But I will find out from him as he knows a dealer.

50$ for the cable? Thats much.

Then it would be cheaper to buy the connectors from bmw and the cable from somewhere

He just got back to me.

$40 per most cable. You need two and the ends are $5 each. And $20 each for Cable head (Copper head) for optical cable. Total price around $100 here. But in Canada everything is expensive for BMW parts.

You might want to check with the dealer. He doesn't have the part numbers with him, but will get back to me.

delete bkombi in svt tree and read ecu again.
if you have the MOST cable connected you will see 6WA Kombi

Hi 1lyfe,

Could you explain more? How to "delete bkombi in svt tree"? Open SVT-Editor, delete bkombi, save it, and then??

Thanks!

Hi mougwai,

Have you addressed the red dot problem? If so, how did get this done? By flash the KOMBI with your VIN?

I'm still quite confused. If, as you've mentioned, one long VIN & 3 short VINs in EEPROM have been blanked, and mileage been cleared. It should no different from new cluster. However, other members did say that you should only need to change SVT and write it back then inject CAFD, coding.... So why flash is necessary?

I'm half considering this. I've got a dealer quote for 550eur (+ VAT), for the cluster.

(I'm having a bit of a spend-a-thon at the moment so considering all my options).

Is there a straight-forward way of retrofitting a S6WAA cluster?

Short of the long, I have a Business Navigation with no extended bluetooth (no combox), but it would be rather nice to upgrade my cluster to an extended version. Primarily for navigation as I like the idea of having that there, but it also looks a lot nicer.

Question is...if I buy a brand new, unused unit, how simple is it to install? I've read through this forum and it's another language!
  • I know how to install the unit. Very simple to do that.
  • I know the EEPROM has to be flashed to my VIN, but how does this happen?
  • How does the mileage update correctly?
  • How do I get it coded to my car? I've read Shawn's summary which sounds straight forward but I see some people have had problems and the dreaded tamper dot which I would like to avoid.

Thanks all!

Success

Yessss, last night I retrofitted my 6WA instrument cluster on my F30 04.2012.

After most connection, I had to code them, there was a little bit problem, when E-Sys doesn't saw Kombi, after adding 6WA to FA, but after saved SVT, deleted BKombi, write STV to car, and read SVT from car again, E-Sys saw Kombi module. Then injected CAFD and VO code it. All is OK, no red DOT, correct KM, service etc.
After done with Kombi, I had to code with 6WA in FA, HU-NBT module, and all OK. Now I have navigation instructions on instrument cluster, ED stats in HU-NBT, everything is working OK.
It is a nice retrofit.

Thank you all , for your help.

I can help others, if they need.

Do you Read ECU rather than Read SVT?

You will need to read svt, save it, delete bkombi from it, write it to car vcm, read ecu after that and you will see kombi.

You do not need to delete existing ECU from SVT to see new ECU. Using Read ECU ignores SVT stored in VCM and actually queries all system buses, and populates SVT based on actual ECU's connected to bus.
