In Germany and Italy the 335i starting price is 65.000$.
Before the release of the first pics of the 4er i was going to order an 320d M sport with some optional (navi, leather seats, PDC) and the price was 68.000$.

I can understand that you see it as an big jump, but still is fairly cheaper than in most countries.

Btw you can't just compare the price with the e92, you should consider the inflation of the last 7 years...

This pricing is ridiculous, about a $5k jump from a 335i with M-Sport and similar options. The only thing you would get with the 4 series is exclusivity and LED headlights...maybe better handling, but that's yet to be seen.

It's a shame, I have a deposit on a M235i down, but I was starting to grow on maybe ordering a 435i, however I would want to order it with Sakhir Orange Metallic and Opal white leather. Adding the options I want, it would be close to $70k

435i / M-Sport

C7 / Z51 / MSRC :

It's scary to say but I actually prefer the Stingray interior to that of bmw. Have seen both in person and there is no denying how well GM has upped their quality.

Exterior wise, two different categories. C7 is function made to look sexy, 4 series is form that has descent function.

Also, official Chevrolet performance numbers put the Stingray imbetween the two official C&D ZR1 lap times, around VIR. Now that is damnnnn impressive.

My 335i M Sport sedan was $59k MSRP so not really surprised that the 4 series would be over $60k.

not true. Even when considering a lease BMW bases their decisions on income. If you make 50k and want to buy a 3 series then yes they most likely will approve as long as your credit score is decent.

now as for the statement about leasing their brand image down... Hello do you remember the Z3 or have you ever travelled to a place called Europe? BMW has always made affordable cars... I mean just go look up the European line up and how you can get 1.4 liter engines.

point being is the US market requires powerful engines equal luxury brand. I mean look at the snobbery about a 4 cylinder engine.. Just go to BMW UK... Their are model lines of the 3 series which would compete with cars like a Mazda 6 and a ford fusion.

Yes, they are migrating the 4 series up market to make room for the 2 series. Also, if you do the math to account for inflation, BMW pricing isn't that bad. I remember the E90Ms came out at about an equivalent price to the E36 when they launched IIRC (barring limited edition frozen markups).

I gave up on new cars (BMWs. etc) a while ago. I'd love a european delivery pickup, but waiting 4 years to get something 30-40% off is worth it to me.

The 4 series looks like a very elegant metro car, not a sport coupe. Matter of fact it doesn't look sporty at all to me, looks like a MB wannabee. BMW execs need to get out of Germany once and a while, they will see most BMW driver's don't consider/cross shop Mercedes.

There is a group of hard core BMW enthusiasts that think of their BMWs as 4 door Porsches. That is why I came to the brand many years ago. BMW is migrating their brand to a broader demographic which makes great business sense to them, though they are diluting their product for that hard core segment. Those that want different:

A) Buy older BMWs that still represent the balance of sport to luxury that they prefer
B) modify the existing products to meet their preferences (Hence aftermarket tuners).
C) Leave the brand for places like Porsche or Corvette.

BMW is doing VERY well as a brand and a business worldwide. Some of us just don't like what they have done to the products to get there.

Of course not, but I'm just saying for me I'd be considering the two. The 435i will be "quick enough".........but the Stingray will be FAST.

I know inflation is a bitch but holy crap. I remember in the 90s an entry level luxury car was like 30k. Even if you argue the 4 series isn't exactly entry level it would have been like 35k at most.

Personally I'd get the vette if I was shopping for a sporty car in that price bracket.

My E92 2012 335i xDrive listed for $5,750 less than the 435i xDrive I just priced out. The new car has the tech package, dynamic handling package, and the ZF auto which my present car doesn't. In addition the new car comes with 18" wheels (mine has 17") and the driving dynamics control as standard.

All things considered, I think the price increase is rather reasonable.

I had a C6 Corvette and Audi S4. Despite the power and sex appeal of the Vette, I much preferred driving the Audi. There are many other cars you can get for the price of a 4 Series and you just have to decide which you prefer.
