Exclamation Air Filtration/Recycle

I have noticed that the smell that comes from the street either from other car emissions can be smelled from inside the car while AC is on and recycle put is pressed!!! Did anyone of you notice it? What needs to be done to rectify it?

No clue. It rarely happens and it doesn't bother me enough to be concerned about it.

There are 3 recirc positions: off, automatic, and full. Which were you using?

The automatic one is suppose to kick in if the car "smells" something, and it seems to do a good job, but doesn't always filter everything out.

I've found that the full recirc does a really good job of keeping smells out.

I use full cycle and it works really well but when I drive pass this really swampy area it's like it's too much for it to handle.

I understand the F30 A/C is a very similar design to the E9x models, albeit a little more advanced. There is no way the pollutant control system will be 100%, whether we think of the carbon filters, the auto sensing where the 'sniffer' sensor detects major pollutants, or we press the manual recirculation button.

Even with manual recirculation there is a limited time before we get a few seconds of 'fresh air' from outside. The auto sensing is still influenced by the anti-fogging (condensation/humidity) sensor, and 'outside air' timer. That also has a pulsing (time regulated) function, influenced by ambient temperature.

So depending on use we may have virtually no issues, but for others it may show up and appear like a fault.

It took a while to find out why the E9x cars were doing this, allowing pollutants in at inappropriate times, but I assure you after having BMW Technical involved and seeing lots of data, it can be completely normal.
